The gold will only wear off if:

You have highly acidic sweat
You don't wipe down your guitar and keep it clean
You don't oil your hardware

I have a few gold hardware guitars and not a single one wears down. Maybe I don't have the nasty acids you guys do. But I also take care of my guitars. I hate playing on the beach (we got a gig a month on the shoreline) because the salty mist builds up. But after the show, no matter how tired I am, the whole guitar gets cleaned up, hardware too. I have a 1991 LP with gold hardware and it's flawless. I have a 1985 SD Soloist with gold, near mint. It's all about taking care, fellows.

Yeah, I've heard of people putting lacquer or nail polish over the gold hardware to help. The gold TOM bridge on my Carvin has a slight bit of wear on it from where my palm rests around the low E string. I used to wipe down my guitar with an old T-shirt after playing, but I think the rubbing on the bridge might have promoted the gold wearing off a little more than my sweat, as I don't sweat much and it doesn't seem to be that corrosive.

The Gold hardware and Gold Floyd on my SD1 still looks awesome and I've played it at heaps of gigs.

No matter how bad the gold corrodes on my LP Standard, it's still a Les Paul Standard.
I got better things to do than worry about inexpensive, easily replaceable hardware, and you guys need to seriously stop treating your guitars like children.

Wolf11 TW25 B will not attract dirt and bonds to the metal(fills pores in the metal)WD40 has moisture content and attracts dirt like a magnet and the dirt acts as an abrasive.WD 40 never dries.TW25 B dries quickly. It can be mixed with alchohol and sprayed on metal surfaces and when the alchohol dries you have a dry lubricant protecting the metal
Here is an example I had an AR-15 rifle that would jam after 100-200 rounds of ammo were sent down range. The gun was so gummed up with carbon build up from the spent ammo it would lock up.
The rep from MilCom saw me having problems and asked me to try his product.I cleaned the gun applied TW25B to all moving parts and the interior of the gas tube.the gun worked flawlessly for the next 5000 + rounds with out cleaning the rifle.I got the rifle HOT so hot it melted the front hand guard.I let it cool then took it apart at his booth and all he did was wipe the parts off with a rag (no solvent)NOW THATS PROTECTION.
Really? well screw Mark Twain.
