If you can't find anything on Ebay that you like and a 1995 USA Jackson Cobalt Blue Dinky for 550 bucks is your kind of thing click here One things is for sure (based on what I have heard on this board), the seller can be trusted and is a really nice guy to deal with (you can't always say the same thing about Ebay people, not that all of them are bad).

And to answer your original question:
Buy a USA Jackson. Nothing plays better IMHO. The first time I played one it was like a religious experience or something. I had no clue that a guitar could be so natural to play, like it played it self. After that experience I decided that I was only buying USA Jacksons and Charvels.

I have USA and Japanese Jacksons and I like them both. I bought them based on feel and sound, not where they were made. That said, my USA Fusion is THE best playing guitar I have ever owned and I have had over 60 guitars over the years. The SLSMG and DK-2 are not that far behind however and spank the pants off of any of my other USA guitars (Fender, G&L, Gibson) in terms of playability and sound. IMHO, Jackson is making the best guitars available at any price.

Summary: If you can find a USA J/C that you can afford then by all means go for it, but on the other hand, the Jackson imports are excellent and there is no shame in playing an excellent guitar. Just watch out for the newer ones and if the volume or tone controls sounds scratchy either pass or make sure the seller or store will replace them for you - they seem to have a bad batch of potentiometers that made it past QA.

lookie here...don't let some of the USA only snobs give you the wrong impression on the Japan made guitars [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img] I have several USA Jackson and USA Charvel guitars/parts guitars as well as import Charvels and one DK-2. The difference really is only in the electonics and bridges. If you replace the pickups (pots on some) and add a Original Floyd there really isn't as much of a differences as some folks want you to believe. I can't speak for the entry level imports but the Model series Charvels and the DK2 all have great fretwork that equals the quality of workmanship of my USA's. I get a kick out of buying parts and putting them together to make a great guitar, some of my best players ands builf from Charvel Japan bodies and necks. I usually spend more for Duncas/DiMarios and Floyds than I do on the body and neck.

Also don't believe that you'll never break a string on a original FLoyd, that is all I have on mine, except one kahler'd Charvel) and it happens. Having said that the OFR is a major upgrade from JT-6 500,580's.

You get what you pay for. There's nothing wrong with off-shore guitars, but the USA stuff is superior and typically holds its value. Better all around. That's all I'll play/buy.

well i love my usa jacksons but in all honesty, the model series i have are on par with the usa jacksons as far as build quality and have the same electronics. but i don't have any c/j newer than 88 so....

There are definitely some imports that can hang with the USA, on an objective level. The SLSMG, the RR5 are two great guitars. I would rather play an SLSMG that the USA SLS - but that's largely based on aesthetics, weight, and the bridge. [img]images/icons/wink.gif[/img]

Going from a MIM St@t to a Import Jackson is a big jump. Kevin Easton has a DK2LE (custom single hum dinky w/maple FB) for well under your budget. That leaves a couple hundred bucks for an amp, or an effect pedal, or whatever.

If you can stand to wait a while, and you can hit up Mom & Dad for a couple hundred $'s more, I would talk to Scott at Vwall guitars about his payment plans on a USA Jackson. Order what you want, start paying on it now, get a summer job, and by the time it comes in...You are set.
