For what it's worth ...

I don't know about the USPS, nor have I had any experience shipping guitars with them, but I do know that most courier services (FedEx, DHL, UPS) have conveyor belts at their processing facilities that move packages to where they need to be. In many cases, these conveyor belts can be up to 50 feet above the ground.

Guess what? Gravity often kicks in. I just got back three CS Fender guitars from a magazine for review, and two of the three had been dropped from very high. Literally, I've never seen a tone pot actually sheared straight down the middle, not to mention the damage to the wood and finish. And don't get me started on the Bass Breaker amplifier that UPS delivered to me last year with gouges through the grille cloth and a chasis completely bent and dislodged.

I've Also seen guitars with necks that have shattered similarly to yours, but the damaged was sustained when the guitar was dropped straight down on its butt. The impact sent pressure right through the body and shatter the entire neck, all the way up the truss rod. Is there any damage to the bottom of your guitar?

that is just plain rediculous . . .that amount of damage doesn't happen from a single, low height drop. that is many beatings and tosses from truck to truck, that sht just doesnt happen like that. . .someone needs to be dacapitated.

It never ceases to amaze me that my Jackson C/S arrived perfectly in tune from UPS, yet I've also been the recipient of mangled boxes. (Thankfully, no mangled guitars, although I'm waiting for one right now, and this thread gives me the creeps!)

I just wonder how much non-guitar stuff gets destroyed in this fashion?

Jim Carey played out the preconception pretty well in Ace Ventura then.

ive cracked the headstock off of 3 guitars, & can tell you that guitar was NOT JUST DROPPED. the fact the fret board seperated from the neck & how it shattered, looks like it was crushed like Jim said or was broken prior to being shipped. i highly doubt the strings were slacked enough either.

God, that sucks bro. I feel your pain. I recently had a guitar delivered damaged and wading through the bullshit claims department after dealing with the loss is no fun.

Re: new jackson neck/headstock design Pixs!!!!

I have a guitar that FMIC was no help getting fixed for me. Readers digest version, mine wasn't fukked by the PO, it was factory. FMIC gave me the run around on warranty work since they just aquired Jackson, and the store I got it from could not help me.

A tech looked at it and said it's fine, but if it breaks, he will stand behind it, and get it fixed/replaced. I know it helps to have a luthier say that kind of thing, but...man anytime that guitar goes out of tune I start to get scared! I end up putting it away for a few weeks, and play a different one!

At least your guitar is just plain fucked, and doesn't scare the shit out of you every once in awhile, but all the while, that's balls to open it up and see that, I apologize for your lose, and can only imagine how pissed off you are!

I didn't see anyone else mention this, but you will need this for a claim.

The ORIGINAL BOX it was mailed to you in, with ALL the packing material, incase they want to *inspect it*, believe me, they've tried to pass off worse as acceptable. Claims with the PO can take WEEKS. If you're getting an estimate for repair, call up the most expensive place you can think of, and then the second most, get high prices, so you can either get it repaired or get a new one.

I've noticed a few people have said this, get the guitar shipped faster if you can afford it, and I can't remember who, maybe Newc or, Racer X said it best (sorry if it's neither of you!) The less time it's in their hands, the less chance of it breaking!

Also, I didn't see that anyone mentioned what postal is. You used to read about PO employees going to work with automatic weapons and killing their co-workers, the term, go postal, means you're going to kill alot of people, or get extremely pissed.

Take care guy, and good luck!

Hey, think about this guys... What would happen to a neck if while it was in the case, some big fucker stepped on it right on that spot? That case material would give and the neck would snap just like that... I'd almost be willing to put money on it! Almost.... That sucks bro!

charveljunkie: They want an estimate? I'll give you one.

$100 to fix the cracks
$350 to strip and repaint
$250 for spray gun (I don't have one)
$500 to turn my garage into a spray booth
$100 labor

So, $1300 to get it repaired. Give 'em that number and tell them the replacement cost is under $1000.

Ive shipped a few guitars USPS and no doas yet...The guitars ive seen broken are usually UPS and sent in the case..I dont know what it is about guitars shipped in a case that causes the necks to snap but it seems to be a epidemic..

I heard recently of one being run over by a forklift ..ship case and guitars seperate..

when i'm reading this board i'm getting more and more scared of buying guitars online , i wanted to order my next guitar per net / buy it from someone at jcf ... when i read things about damaged guitars that were all covered in bubblewrap and/or bulletproof cases it makes me wonder ...
