  • Pickup Questions

I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to have 1 guitarist using passive pickups, and 1 guitarist using active pickups? I mean would it be bad for me, a rhythm guitarist, to use active pickups, EMGs, while my lead guitarist uses passive pickups, Seymour Duncans. Would this sound wierd? The lead guitarist is getting an ENGL Powerball, and I am getting an ENGL Fireball. Thanks ahead of time for the input.

Whatever you do, don't cross the streams. It's bad.

      Re: Pickup Questions

I like hearing a bit of difference in the guitar sounds from dual-guitar bands. As long as both guitar sounds work together and fit the music you're playing, I see nothing wrong with it.

That was one of the thing I liked with Helloween BTW - in the leads, you could instantly tell which guitarist was playing what.

        Re: Pickup Questions

I played in a 2-guitar band a several years ago and my primary guitar had EMG's while the other guitarist used passive pickups. I played most of the leads, but he played some, too. The differences between players and equipment made for a good contrast.

In the end, if it sounds good, it is good.
