Jackson humbuckers made before about 1992 or so were regular-sized humbuckers--didn't even have wide Floyd spacing. The pickup COVER that was used before 1992 was huge and required the big mounting ring, but the pickup itself did not. And I have never had any problem mounting a Duncan/Dimarzio (even a wide-spaced Duncan) in the Jackson pickup ring, even if it looks a little funny with that bit gap between ring and pickup. However, if you want to use a covered Jackson humbucker, you will obviously need the big mounting ring, or you will have to remove the cover--which supposedly improves the sound, anyway.

Budman thanks for the PM and the last response. Thanks for pointing out the difference between the raised letter ansd silk screened logoed covered humbuckers. I thought all the covered humbuckers were one and the same and oversized. Thanks for clearing that up.

Did Jackson ever make the smaller covered J-90c? Now I gotta break out my Fusion as it might have a smaller humbuxcker and it mayt be a J-90c even though it doesn't sound like my older J-90c.

Is there a thread in the archive that chronicles the history of their pickups? That would save me from making questions that probably have been answered before.

Thanks all and I have to say this is a great site.

Just confused how a mid/late 80's J-50b or J-90c for that matter, could be wider than Seymour Duncans and then a few years later Grover Jackson decides to downsize the pickups, but this time he sizes them SMALLER than conventional pickups. Doesn't seem logical.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">In 1991, the custom shop built 75 transparent red and 75 transparent blue Strathead Charvels for the German distributor then. Sometimes they are named 1991 ltd edition, but since they have 4 digits serial numbers (reserved for custom orders) and only built for the german distributor, I assume it's rather a custom order than a ltd edition. The same year, there are also 25 similar (at leat pickups and controls are not identical) Charvels in tobacco burst made for France.
I own one of the transparent red Charvels built for Germany, and this is the guitar I am talking of.

This is my 1991 Charvel, one of the 75 transparent red ones for Germany

This is one of the 25 1991 Charvels built for France. This guitar belongs to JCF member Lunee.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I was just repeating what others here have said about them. I've never liked Jackson humbuckers, with or without covers--so I've never been motivated to test the difference in sound with the covers off.
