Re: Favorite & Least Favorite Inlays / Fretboards

likes: ebony or maple fretboars; MOP sharks and reverse sharks, abalone inlays (even dots if they are abalone)

what i´m looking for is a maple fretboard with ebony sharks, that´s really cool.

disklikes: rosewood fretboards; plastic shark inlays, simple white dots

Re: Favorite & Least Favorite Inlays / Fretboards

The fretboard has to be either bound ebony or unbound maple. On maple I want no inlays or dots, but on ebony I think a pretty wide variety of things are cool...sharkfins, Hamer boomerangs etc.

Likes: ebony, pao ferro, & birdseye and flamed maple, any non-dot inlays that don't extend across multiple frets.

Dislikes: rosewood, dot inlays, huge busy inlay work that runs across multiple frets.

LIKES: Ebony Sharkfins on Maple board, just about anything Abalone, offset dots, offset blocks. For FBs: Ebony, maple and dark/reddish rosewood.

DISLIKES: light sharkies on dark boards (done to death), light rosewood FBs

I don't particularly like or dislike the lowly dot. I simply accept it for what it is

Re: Favorite & Least Favorite Inlays / Fretboards

I have to admit I love MOP Shark Fins - I always have. However, I have an Ibanez S520 with wavy line inlays - also very nice.

I do not like dots...just boring!

Again, all depend on the particular guitar and its finish. But generally speaking...

Inlay likes: Dots. Black on maple. MOP or abalone dots on maple, too. I've never truly "loved" sharkies, but have been warming up to them more and more in the last few years. It's more like a "good like" now, but only on ebony. Many custom inlays patterns are cool, too. Lack of inlays can be cool, too.

Inlay dislikes: Vines have been overdone. Pihranas or offset dots. Blocks or trapaziods, although they'll look good on certain guitars (LPs and acoustics, mainly). Offset blocks / squares on ESPs make me want to hurl. PRS birds can look cool, but in a few years will be considered fruity. With more time, though, they'll probably come back to become "classic" again. Most abalone inlays look too gaudy to me, unless the guitar has a green or blue finish. The cheapo plastiod 'fins on Jackson imports. Way cheesy.

Fretboard likes: Maple, pao ferro, ebony, rosewood. In that order.

                  Fretboard dislikes: None.

Re: Favorite & Least Favorite Inlays / Fretboards

I prefer an ebony neck with no inlays but I'll settle for pearloid blocks like on one of my Carvins.

My bad. I should have said indian rosewood. Brazilian rosewood is similar in feel to ebony. It's very smooth and very dense. You can't really feel the grain like you can on Indian or typical rosewood thats used on just about everything.

I have seen Brazilian rosewood used on acoustic guitar bodies but STILL have not seen Brazilian used as a fretboard... only Indian. But I'll take your word for it.

NOTP - Check the PRS Brazilian series. They're using it for necks / fretboards on some models and fretboards on others. It's gorgeous.
