as far as versatility and whatever else go i owuld have to say the trem jsut for the note bending benefit, but i am a string through fan, simply because it is easier to adjust the action.
String-thru without a doubt. Vintage trems suck for staying in tune. Sure, you can lock down a vintage-style trem, but when I actually want to use the bar, it's gotta be a Floyd.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
I prefer string thru guitars just for the benefit of tuning and action adjustment is easier. Plus I like the strings higher over the body so a Tunomatic or non recessed Floyds or the Kahler are my choices.
Probably string through because there's not a pound of wood missing for the trem installation! On the same note, any of my Jacksons with the Kahler pro sound better than the one's with Floyds or JT6's. There also MUCH louder acoustically.

I'd go for trem (Van Halen, Dimebag, Morello, Satch, Vai, Hendrix, Vaughan, Randy).
I also prefer bolt on.
It's just an opinion. The other half of your tone (the AMP) really makes a BIGGER difference ... you can be more flexible with shaping the tone of a guitar (pickups, strings) than you can with a shitty amp.
Mojo Tone is v-trem. Brass saddles, baseplate, and spring block. Blocked or unblocked, that's part of the Van Hasbeen tone
Good tone is Floyd or stopbar/TOM

On the basis of tone, alone, V trem. But, if I'm going to buy a trem-equipped guitar, it has to be a Floyd. IMHO, the marginal tone benefit is waaayyyy outweighed by the tuning stability of a Floyd and the flexibility of actually being able to use the trem for its intended purpose.
That's probably why I currently own nothing but Floyds and one string-through. ...Although I do have a V-trem mutt in the works.
