Re: Popular myths about Charvel and Jackson guitars

Micheal Jackson tried to sue Jackson back in the 80s to change their name, because he didn't want his name associated with "the Devil's Music"

Myth: Jackson guitars are only good for playing "Metal"
Fact: only if you have a turnip for a brain.

Myth: Those are just "fad" geetars
Fact: What other "fad" has lasted for 20 years? None.

Myth: Charvel and Jackson ripped off Fender and Gibson
Fact: Charvel and Jackson improved Gibson and Fender designs, which is why Grover Jackson AND Wayne Charvel were hired by Gibson when they left the company.

Jackson copied ESP designs and HS... That is one I hear all the time.

Myth: Charvel and Jackson USA models are nice but the imports suck.

Fact: The Japanese factory built/builds guitars that were/are every bit as fine of quality as the USA factory.

Yeah, I understand the point of making generalizations like A is better than B, those are myths attached to all brands. It is hard to state 'facts' based on preferance. As an example, I prefer a '55-'56 Fender Strat neck carve and ash body, which makes me feel that a 1955-6 Strat is superior to a 1957-9 Strat, but in reality they are all made by the same people to the same level of quality and many people prefer the opposite. San Dimas versus Ontario as well as USA versus Japan is a matter of personal preferance.

Myths:

Mid-90s Charvel Reissues have no mojo of their own.

Jackson USA pickups were poor quality.

Wayne was primarily responsible for the success of San Dimas-era Charvels.

Strathead "mojo" is real, tangible, observable, and measurable.

Thanks for the input, see my post just before yours.

I can see the Wayne issue is something that should be added. How is the best way to address that? It has to be factual and informative and not hostile.

Re: Popular myths about Charvel and Jackson guitars

I was making my "Myth vs. Fact" statement based on the quality of the instrument itself, not playability according to particular preferences such as neck shapes, fretboard radiuses, scale length, etc. I guess I misunderstood your post.
OK, how about this:
Myth: San Dimas neckplate means "Made in San Dimas CA".
Fact: No Charvel or Jackson guitars were ever made in San Dimas CA.

Quality is even subjective to a certain extent. I see your point and added a 'generalizations' portion to address the San Dimas versus Ontario versus Fender and USA versus Japan debates. Bottom line is that a person unfamiliar with each style has to try all variations and see what they prefer with an open mind.

I'd go with a straightforward timeline showing when the buyout occurred in relation to the building of the first prepros. An impartial approach, just the cold hard facts. People can draw their own conclusions as to how much of his vision carried over & went into the guitars, but like Greg pointed out earlier, it's annoying to see people making up BS about Wayne verifying their Charvels or claiming "made by Wayne himself!!" in ads on eBay.

Neckthroughs have superior sustain/tone/quality compared to bolt-ons. You can apply that to Jackson neckthroughs versus Jackson bolt-ons, Charvel neckthroughs versus Charvel bolt-ons, Jackson versus Charvel, and J/C versus other brands. Myth #2

Ontario Jackson strats are inferior to San Dimas Strats ..

Truth:

The move from Glendora to Ontario also included the purchase of more equipment and gave them more room to work comfortably.

Ontario 87-89 guitars have a higher overall build quality compared to late San Dimas plated guitars.
