Re: I Saw Van Halen Last Night!

He always drank before going onstage because he is an alcoholic. It sucks that many of the good ones die young. He isn't going to last much longer. It's a disease and he has it bad. I will stick to my memories of a young EVH prior to the alcohol really taking its toll on him. That was around 1982.

Re: I Saw Van Halen Last Night!

Yeah, I think both shows were sold out. I'm pretty sure most of the venues they're playing at are sold out. I'm considering going to see them again in CT on Monday if I can get tix.

For those that don't know, an SSL is one of the worlds most advanced studio mixing boards. Apparently someone talked Eddie into selling the board he had at 5150 and buying an SSL, but he hates it. Countless albums have been recorded using these boards but Eddie is such an unconventional guy in both his playing and recording techniques that he was pretty bummed when he started using it. In his interview he says that he dismantled it and removed as much of the high tech stuff as he possibly could. Then he called it a million dollar piece of shit! It's a good interview if you get a chance to read it.

Re: I Saw Van Halen Last Night!

I can't stand the whole Sammy VH.. never seen em..
I'll never forget when I was in high school and the Detroit Disc jockeys were pumpin the new VH to be released at such and such a time...

I was so fuckin excited I skipped school that day (like every other day, but actually had a legitimate excuse this time) just so I could be by my stereo when I heard the new VH for the first time..

I heard that cheezy synth intro to "Why can't this be Love" and hated VH ever since..

For the record, I have tickets to both Detroit shows but after seeing that poor excuse for a set list, I will sell at leat one show's tickets for sure, maybe both.

It just goes to show that Eddie and Alex still can't get over this pissing match with Dave and still refuse to play what the fans want to hear.

6 DLR era songs? are you fucking kidding me? Eddie re-defined rock guitar playing in the early Dave days.. He gave nothing but phycho babble from a players standpoint in the Sammy era.
politics and radio friendly cheese songs were the norm for the "new" VH and it totally turned off the real rockers. They still make me want to puke

Don't get me wrong.. Sammy can sing his ass off. I loved him in Montrose and even better as a solo artist. I think Sammy is better when the brothers Halen arent pulling his puppet strings.

I also feel VH was better in the Dave era as Eddie did what he was supposed to: showcase the talents of the greatest guitar player on the planet and leave the showboating attitude stuff for the greatest frontman of all time-Diamond Dave.

No, Dave never was the most polished singer as far as a vocal standpoint, and when he shut up long enought to sing the lyrics, it was quite an amazing spectical.

I think it is all about chemistry. Sammy lacks it in VH.. He always came off as an outsider to me. Maybe i could have swallowed it if they renamed themselves and just did a clean break-away from anything Van halen related.
I think "radio posers-please make me rich" would have been a more appropriate name for the Sammy line-up.

Oh yeah.. And if you were in diapers when Dave was around, don't respond to this post.. You wouldn't have a clue unless you seen them live..

SSL=Solid State Logic,it's a fancy mixing board/recording console used in most high-end studios, some folks think they sound kinda sterile!! Chucksplatter

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">California World Music Festival, April 1979, LA Coliseum (I was 12), Van Halen World Invasion Tour (LA Forum 1980), Van Halen Fair Warning Tour(LA Forum July 1981), Van Halen Lock Up Your Daughters Tour (LA Forum September 1982), US Festival (Devore May 1983), 1984 Tour (May 1984). I've also attended all of the Sammy-era tours, except the 15th anniversary at the Whiskey, too many people! BUT no Gary Cherone.

I will say the Sammy-era is much less lunacy, no more cross stage knee slides, and jumping from drum risers. OMG, EVH used to do his split jump off of Alex's riser - DAMN he could fly. On the Diver Down tour, he ran from stage left, and mid stage went into a knee slide all the way to Mike's mic stand, all the while holding an A chord and nailing the solo!

During the 1986 5150 tour, EVH was putting on weight and his face pudged out and he was sporting these weird fluorscent pajama pants that would have HUGE ass sweat by the end of the show. During the Balance tour in 1995 his weight really ballooned and w/ the shorter hair, he really looked pudgey.

My favorite period is the WACF, FW, DD tours, where EVH flew, was playing his Frankenstrat and still using a load-box, variac'd, Marshall.

But, for the record, I'll be at the Mandalay Bay in Vegas and the Staples Center in LA for the reunion show. If you've never seen VH in their natural habitat (Los Angeles), IT'S a total spectacle, ESPECIALLY when DLR was fronting VH. Nowhere like playing for the HOME crowd.
