Maybe Ed should RTFM

OK, we got Ed back on the bottle so now he can play guitar again. Now if we can just get Dave Mustaine back on a major drug binge.........

Re: I Saw Van Halen Last Night!

East Rutherford Show was great last night.

Eddie wore his hair down for most of the show.... Not that I care but a bunch of people here are making a big deal out of it so....

He moved around a lot and did a bunch of his signature Jumps...

            Had one Cigarette...

They sounded tight. Backups were a bit weak but were on par for any live bootleg/Live performance I have seen or heard them on.... Dave or no Dave. The backing vocals for VH are always good on the album and crappy live so...

Anyway. He looked good. A lot better than in the pics or what others have described they have seen so far IMO.

He used the same guitars as the previous nights. The Wolfgang he is using has a Sustainer system in it. He used the guitar and the sustainer for most of the show.

Cool looking stage. They made good use of it. Nice light show too.

Glad I went. Skeptical at first but glad I went.

quote: Sammy Hagar has am amazing voice, IMHO, Dave is the eternal frontman but he cant hold a candle to Sam!

hahahahahahahah...dumbest statement ever...when DLR quit VH the sound , spirit, songwriting and lyrics took a turn for the way , way worse...Sammy is just so damn cheesy, and there live show is a borefest because of it. Sammy seems like a decent guy and the first Montrose album is killer, but there couldn't be a bigger buzzkill for what Van Halen were about...and Dave, while not the most gifted singer ( Like Jaggar, Bowie, etc. etc.) is a hell of a showman, lyricist and the master of the real VH vibe....I thought a reunion with Dave would have been bad...until I heard Me Wise Magic and Can't get this Stuff no more....there is a magic when Ed and Dave get together...the Van Hagar stuff is just awful in my opinion.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Actually, I disagree with much of this view. Many hoping for a DLR reunion (self-included) assume that this will bring back the "old VH" sound and songs. That didn't go away because Roth went bye-bye. It went away because Eddie changed.

Read through the recent Guitar Legends post-Roth era interviews and you can hear it in EVH's own responses. His style changed, his songwriting changed, his playing changed. For better or worse is each own's opinion. But Roth, Hagar, whoever sings... Eddie is who Eddie is. They won't change him or bring him back in time to his "early VH" style or songwriting. Sure, I greatly prefer the Roth-era VH. But it ain't coming back. ...Why? Because EVH changed. Not because of who's singing. Accept it. Move on. Enjoy what you can.

And, as someone else mentioned earlier on, this may be your last opportunity to see him live. From what we can see and hear, Eddie may be in a downward spiral. Perhaps the final one for him. I truly hope not. The man still kicks major @ss.

Re: I Saw Van Halen Last Night!

One of the bands I'm playing with wants me to learn High Hopes by Sammy. The song's not that bad, but listening to the lyrics is almost unbearable. It's the same formula as Why Can't This Be Love: get all the cliches and catch phrases that you can think of and string em together into a song. And what makes it worse is that Sammy's a decent singer, so when he actually delivers these cheesy lyrics in his trademark style, it sounds like a parody. It's like listening to someone trying to inject as much power and emotion as possible in singing the words off a bunch of Hallmark cards and fortune cookie fortunes.

Yes, Sammy is the king of cheese!

Maybe Ed just likes to have nut cases like himself for company. Have you ever heard Sammy talk about his alien encounters? He makes Ed look normal.

Re: I Saw Van Halen Last Night!

Sammy is the shit - but not as much when he's in VH. He's better on his own or with Montrose. Although he has done some great stuff with VH, I prefer him with his own band. For some reason, it just sounds dated. I believe it might have something to do with VH's background vocals, chorus layed guitars, the keyboards???? Even Gary Cherone was brought down a few notches when he joined VH. Listen to Waiting For The Punchline, it kills VH3. Some line-ups just don't work.

There was something magical about the creative dichotomy with Dave.

As they said, "you can't get that stuff no more."

PS: I'll still be going to see the tour.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">As someone who's seen Dave as many times as Sammy, it truly IS Eddie's who's changed. Think about it. If EVH put out tunes/material like FW or VH1, do you think it'd matter who was singing or what they were singing? Certainly the show'd be different - I'll give you that. But all the Dave rapping on WACF and FW was annoying in 1980 and 1981, and probably wouldn't go over so well now. DD, 1984 and EEAS didn't have a lot that rap, and no one seemed to miss it. And before I get flamed, I LOVE DLR's showmanship as much as anyone. I'm just trying to be objective in identifying the root cause of what made VH, well, VH. And yes it was DLR's lyrics, but for me, it was EVH's sound and playing. And like or not, it moved away in 1986 w/ all of the Eventide Harmonization and chorusing IMHO.
