Re: I Saw Van Halen Last Night!

I remember driving to the Worcester Centrum for the Diver Down show. We had a big poster of Dave and Ed taped to the hood of the car, the recommended by the artist bottle of J.D.,and other accoutrements. Eddie had just wiped out in Philly I think, breaking? his wrist or something...so he had some kind of cast in Worcester. He was ripping anyway. I recall they always had to add a second show at the Centrum. Eddie was probably drinking that night, and the night he hurt his wrist... saw them again at the Centrum for 1984.
I have most of the newspaper clippings from these shows. I will scan a couple. Worcester loves Van Halen.
It's really good that Eddie is back out there playing. Sure, too bad it's not Dave there too. But after all the guy has been through, good for him. And cool to see him pulling out the Strat head.
It seems as far as DLR era vs. Sammy Banana era is the REAL VH was songs about lust. and Sam Halen songs are about love...
It all used to seem larger than life.
don't even mention the Fair Warning tour at Boston Garden....forget it... Ed rules. still!

Re: I Saw Van Halen Last Night!

JMO, Ed's dismissal of DLR's huge contribution to VH's undeniable impact to music is either just business or petty denial or a combination of both...

I mean VH is in the music *business*. What are they going to say, Van Hagar is *almost* as good as Van Halen I?

On the denial front, Ed's gushing over Sammy/Gary looks similar to what most dudes do when their girlfriend hits the road and leaves them with a broken heart. He hooks up with a new one and tells the world how the last one won't be missed because the new one is so much better.

        Whatever.

Hey, only fools rush in, and only time will tell
If we stand the test of time.

Saw the Jersey show Tues. Enjoyed myself, but realized how much better Sammy is by himself. He can't be the rocker he is while in that group. Saw Sammy last year and he had the whole Arts Center rocking. The sound at times, sounded like it was being funneled thru a fish aquarium. If I put my fingers in my ears, it was much better. I could hear the music being played without all the crap. Eddie needs Dave and Dave needs Eddie. Sammy needs to part ways and restart his own tour. It would definitly be an upgrade for Sammy.

I think VH was one of the first bands to play at the Centrum in 82. That's when the place was built. Dammit, I wish I went to that show!!

Looking at those pictures it appears to be the old 5150 body with a new neck. You can see the line on the body where he used to have his extra picks stuck to. The old Charvel from the first album had many different necks on it, too.

Re: I Saw Van Halen Last Night!

I drove down to Hartford CT last night and saw VH again. This time they were WAY better than the night I saw them in Worcester. Eddie didn't appear to be drunk and although he made some mistakes here and there, he played really well. He was running all over the place, not bad for a guy with a hip replacement!

My CPA Alan is also the accountant for Eddie's guitar tech Matt. Alan spent a good part of the day yesterday hanging out backstage, according to him all the amps are 5150's. Man, they sounded good. I had heard that he was running a modded Marshall, which doesn't seem to be the case!

I'm still trying to get the skinny on the red/white striped guitar... stay tuned.

Re: I Saw Van Halen Last Night!

I just love all the EVH bashing.

His biggest mistake was shooting his whole load on the first album. You try writing guitar driven masterpieces as melodic as every single frekin song on his first album. Almost every song on that album still gets radio play. You have your whole life to write your first album and only 6 months to write the next one if you are lucky.

Sure his style changed, and as well it should have. AC/DC still has the same sound as they used to and IMHO they are about as stale as could be.

Changing styles are as refreshing to the people who listen to it as it is to the people who write and have to play it every night.

Now look at what VH still is: Guitar driven melodic "IN KEY" music with guitar solo's that isn't hiding behind chord bashing.
