• The "Crossroads" debate.. Charvel or Jackson?

Hey, I know that his has been discussed here a million times.. and the field is pretty evenly spread on whether the red, double hum guitar that Vai plays in Crossroads is a Charvel or a Jackson with the logo covered up..

OK, I got the guitar battle clip on my computer.. and being of the die hard "it's a Charvel" camp.. I wanted to see if I could find any proof, either for or against my stance.. I was willing to accept the outcome, whatever it may be... And you know what I found out!

NOBODY is wrong!! I looked through the clip and first thing I saw was what looked like tape covering up what would appear to be a "Jackson" sized logo on the headstock at about 7+ minutes into the clip... the tape even looks like it's cut in the shape of the "J".. So, I was ready to concede defeat at that time.. BUT, I was looking at it again today.. really more just trying to pick out where the luthier joint is on the back of the neck, when what do my eyes happen to spy at exactely 4:30 into the clip.. but an UNMISTAKABLE San Dimas Charvel Serial # plate on the guitar... It's at the part right where he's doing the "train" thing, and he's about to get into our buddy Ralph's face, and he whips the guitar up damn near over his head... I just happened to stop it, as it was showing a decent shot of the back of the neck.. when I spied the plate.

If I knew how to get screen shots of this off of my Windows Media Player, I would post them.. but I've got Windows ME and I have no clue.. if anyone can tell me how, I'll post some screen shots..

But anyway, it does appear to me to be a Charvel with a Jackson neck.. or a Jackson with a Charvel plate.. or any combination there-of..

Please return to your regularly scheduled progamming.. Have a nice day.

    And yes, I was bored...

Sweet.... I made my wife watch it with me again this weekend. I told her it was cause I am a Charvel Jackson fan and NOT a Ralph Machio fan.

That's cool you found that but, does it really matter anyway? They were both being made in the same factory at the same time anyway, right? I mean if you think about it back in what, I guess 83 to 85 weren't these basically the same? Please correct me if I'm wrong here... or more acurate dates.

Pause the video at that point, hit the "ALT" + "PrtScn" key (above the "Insert" key) and then paste that from the clipboard into MS Paint, save it as a JPG with NO compression, and upload it, then post it here

And no, it doesn't matter whether it's a Charvel or a Jackson, but many people would like to know anyway.

Then again, we have seen examples of USA Jacksons with Charvel plates (one on Ebay last week), and Vai was not shy about modding guitars, so it could be a Charvel with a Jackson neck or a Jackson with a Charvel neck.

Stephan, considering this latest evidence,it could be a late serialized Charvel with a Jackson logo(I have two in the Gallery,#5463 & #5454!!)so don't be to quick to accept defeat bro!!Sorry to add to the confusion!! Chucksplatter

OK, well... I tried the Alt + Print Scrn and save to MS Paint thing, and it didn't work.. So, I just took some digi-pics of the screens on pause... the pics aren't near as good as the original screens, but you get the "picture"..

The first is at 4:29 into the clip, and was hard as hell to capture again as the plate only comes out of the shadow for a fraction of a damn milisecond, the fact that I caught it the first time was a freekin' miracle..

And the next is at 7:20 into the clip, and pretty much definitely shows what looks like a Jackson logo with tape over it.. I mean it looks like they cut the tape to EXACTELY fit over the logo.. this pic turned out a little better because Vai wasn't whippin' the guitar around at the time..

Sorry for the crappiness of the pics.. but it's the best I can do under the circumstances.. I'm computer illiterate!

I still say it's a late serialized Charvel with a Jackson logo!!

The very early 86 Charvel I had had the Charvel SD plate with a jackson logo on the headstock ser # 5490.

To make Windows Media Player vidcaps:

To make vidcaps, follow these instructions for Windows Media Player (by the way, I'm using Windows Media Player 9, so menus may vary for different versions)...

1.) Play your video file in Windows Media Player and pause the video at the moment you want to take a screenshot of.

                          2.) Go to TOOLS, OPTIONS.

3.) Click on the PERFORMANCE tab.

4.) Under VIDEO ACCELERATION, drag the slider over to NONE.

5.) Click on APPLY and then OK.

6.) Follow the instructions for pasting into your graphics program like for screencaps.

And you're done. Make sure to reset the VIDEO ACCELERATION back to FULL afterwards.

Guys that is clearly a Hondo. Steve was just too embarrassed to be caught playing a brand with such a bad reputation, but he knew how good it played, sounded, and looked (just like any Hondo that you pick up off the shelf), so he just stuck a Charvel neckplate on it and covered up the logo with tape.

Definitely a Charvel plate with a Jackson headstock logo.
