hey everyone! i dunno if this is the right forum, but i was wondering if anyone's got any pics of their pao-ferro fretboard, or neck, or anything pao-ferro going on with their gear? I think i've got pao-ferro on my flames strat, but i'm not sure what pao-ferro exactly looks like so, can anyone help me out and flash us some Wood? (and not morning wood people...)

Re: anyone got any cool pao-ferro going on ???
My bro's new bass with pao ferro fretboard up close. I JUST took this pic just now.
In my experience, it's got the look of rosewood with the slick feel of ebony.
Here's what Warmoth says about pao ferro:
Relatively new as a fingerboard wood but very well suited to this purpose. Very smooth texture similar to ebony. Tonally brighter than rosewood but not as bright as ebony. Color varies from light tan to a darker coffee color. Usually quarter sawn to show nice striping. Primarily a fingerboard wood though occasionally available for necks as well.
I'd say it's pretty correct. My bro's new bass is made from Warmoth parts.

wow thats sweet!
Can we have close-ups, to anyone who owns any? I'd particularly like to know more about the color, the tone, and the grain, to see it anyways.
my board looks a bit too light to be rosewood, i think, but its got some great figuring, it just, doesn't look rosewood...i'd post pics, i have no digicam...

oopps, i posted too soon...
YES! thats perfect NOTP! My strat def. has that board! Yeah, the board feels very nice and slick, except the first two frets, kind rough there, playing too much i guess (getting the MOJO started, lol).
i used to wonder if it would look nicer if it was darker, but i've learned to appreciate the beauty of it! Thanks, and keep the pics coming!
awesome stuff!

yeah, i cleaned the board today, and i noticed a weird vertical dark mark, no bigger than 1 mm...wonder what it is... but it certainly looked nicer after the cleaning! i should post pics of it sometime. its got like a Reverse flame job (like dime's with the flames going the other way), orange transparent flame (you can see the wood grain) on black. its awesome, i love it.
thanks xeno and NOTP!

Re: anyone got any cool pao-ferro going on ???
Pao ferro is a very, very cool fretboard wood. It feels like ebony - very, very dense, hard and smooth. A much tighter grain - not much in the way of open gaps - more similar to ebony than rosewood. Toneally, they say it's more like ebony and maple than rosewood. IMHO, the tone differences are marginal. Feel and look are much more important to me.
Looks wise, it's basic color is somewhat similar to rosewood. The differences sometimes don't show well in pictures. But if you put a piece of rosewood next to pau ferro, you'd easily be able to tell the difference in person. Medium brownish, a little bit lighter than most rosewood. But it can have some red-ish or rust-like tints to it, as well. (You can see this a bit in the headstock pic above - a nice cool match to the red flames, too. ) However, the "highlights", if you will, are pretty different. It tends to be more "streaky" than rosewood, with some dark brown and black patterns in it. Again, it's cool s**t. Obviously, each piece of wood is different and quality varies, too, so these are only general observations about my own, etc.
Highly recommended! I might do another custom with it.

Oh man, I just could never get tired of looking at that Archtop of Xeno's. That's got to be one of the most drop-dead gorgeous guitars I've seen!
Then again, Shreddermon's Charvel ain't shabby either!

mmm. I think it is normal Rosewood that needs oil or something.. Maybe it is very dry.

It probably is Rosewood. It's not dry at all, just really light in color. It gets a light lemon oiling every string change.

Actually that is Archtop's Archtop now. I'm posting the picture cause I own the picture, and also cause I don't think he'd mind me showing off his guitar to JCFers that would want to drool over it! The 2nd Amendment: America's Original Homeland Defense.
