• DK1 vs. DK2

Do the DK1s and DK2s have identical body and neck specs?

The reason I ask is that I picked up a DK2 over the weekend at a pawnshop for a buddy of mine. It was the first time I tried a DK and found out the body size and neck were about perfect for me. I fronted the money and now I really don't want to sell it to him but I am committed. Anyhow, if he decides to keep it (I gave him a full money back option if he doesn't like it)I would probably start looking for an older HSS DK1 if the specs are the same.

Are they the same? Should I start saving DK1 funds?

Usually, non-USA necks differ to USA necks in back shape and fretwork. Also the USA bolt-ons have oil finished necks, whereas all non-USA necks are painted.

So, the play and feel of a DK2 is very different to a DK1. Personally, I would prefer the DK1.

None of my import bolt-ons have a painted neck.

As compared to my SL2H the DK2 had sharp fret ends, but nothing too crazy. However, the neck profile and thickness was just far more comfortable for me than than the SL2H's neck. It's weird how much I liked it. Even the width felt different and better.

My import RR has an oiled neck, and the profile and fret size seem identical to my USA Jacksons. As far as I can tell, the only real difference is the DK1 has a bound ebony fingerboard, and the DK2 has a unbound rosewood board.

The Jackson catalog and/or resources section here have the neck specs...

I dunno, maybe I should just chalk it up to the usual new/different guitar excitement.

I do know I like that neck thickness and body size though.

The DK2 vs SL(1-2h)...BIG difference in neck specs. I didn't like the Dk2 neck profile and sold mine.

My Soloist is an '87, so I have no idea how it compares to a modern Soloist or Dinky. It feels the same as my LED Rhoads that I just picked up a month back from Guitar Xpress.

I'm pretty sure most imports have matte clear finishes, not oil finishes. More durable, and less prone to moisture absorption.

All the non-USA Charvels and Jacksons I have ever seen have painted necks. The satin lacquer of the non-USA bolt-on necks feels close, but not identical, to oil finished necks. Some people take satin painted necks for oil finished necks.

Well, technically "paint" is a color and not the same as a matte satin or high gloss finish that you're talking about, Toby. Here's my bolt-on USA JJP. It's got a painted neck with a clear high gloss finish over it... same as most neck-thrus have.
