Re: Allan Holdsworth Charvel?

[ QUOTE ]
I sold my old Holdsworth to Foxyguitars. If he still has it...he won't let it go cheap. BTW it is a great guitar. I bought off Tim Rose from Charvel Central. It has some dings. And it has been played. But a sweet guitar none the less. You're an NH guy? I used to live in Hampstead, NH. Now I live in Tampa,Fl. Some weather you guys are having up there huh?

[/ QUOTE ]

Thanks for the info... I *was* a NH guy. Moved to Nothern Kalifornia about 15 years ago and never looked back.

I was stunned when the Old Man of the Mountains fell down last year, though.

Since my chances of getting a Holdsworth seem freakin' slim, anyone want to suggest an alternative in the Charvel family that'll do the trick. I'm not really in the mood to spend $2500 on a guitar that won't make me a dime.

I saw Holdsworth play as well... think it was Boston and he opened for Chick Corea or something like that? He was playing his Steinberger by then. That guitar was about as dull and lifeless as they come, but he sure made it sing.

You like California? I ended up moving to Tampa. It's nice...sunshine and palm trees. The Holdsworth Charvels are very hard to come by. If fact any Strathead San Dimas is gonna cost bucks. I was thinking of putting a guitar together with similar specs to the Holdsworth. You can find them in this Guitar Player mag link http://archive.guitarplayer.com/arch...sworth82.shtml It is an old 80s interview with Holdsworth. My guitar body I believe was made of Basswood. It had a swimming pool route, Seymour Ducan 59 bridge pickup and a Dimarzio Vintage type tremolo. The neck spacing is unique at the heel and nut. Maple neck, ebony board. Simple, but very resonant. You'll have to go through the interview for the exact specs. Good Luck.

You might want to consider a Carvin Holdsworth model...although I am not sure if the neck specs are the same.

Another option maybe to try and find a Mighty Mite, Dimarizo or Scheter kit or parts and build one yourself. Sometimes you will see Dimarizo bodies for sell on ebay and you can always complete the project by custom ordering a neck from Warmoth with the correct specs.

here's a link to my red Holdsworth.
i took it to show him a couple of weeks ago in Boston. He played it for a few minutes and remarked that it was very similar to his original, which he implied was in the possession of his luthier, Bill DeLap. I asked him to sign the Charvel but he declined , saying he didnt want to deface it.
He was ripping it up, I saw 2 shows in a row.

Re: Allan Holdsworth Charvel?

The Carvin Holdsworth model has a pretty fat neck all the way around--I doubt it's much like the old Charvel. However, it does have a warm sound, since it is chambered.

Carvins Holdsworth neck is huge, nothing like a San Dimas Charvel Holdsworth profile!!

I tried a used Carvin Holdsworth in my local GC. I didn't think the neck was all that big. It seemed similar to the '59 rounded profile of my Les Paul Studio. I've got smaller hands, but I prefer the feel of necks that are a little thicker.

That's weird Joe,I like larger profile necks too but the neck on the Carvin AH I played was just uncomfortable,wrist-cramps for sure,I wonder if they offer different profiles??!!

[/ QUOTE ]It was definitely larger than a regular Carvin, but it didn't feel too big. Not sure if there's different profiles, but I don't believe so. Maybe it's the flatter 20" fingerboard radius that had something to do with it?? I only played it for a couple of minutes sitting down, so I guess I didn't get a real feel for it, but it felt nice. My wrist usually gets more uncomfortable playing thinner necks.

Not really Chuck, I was not sure if Carvin offered the Holds with different neck dimensions, that is maybe we were both right. I just had assumed maybe you played one with different neck shape than the ones I played.

Can only speak for the ones I actually palyed and you have far more hands on experience (around guitars) than me so I just assumed there was different neck options avilable from Carvin.

From my personal playing of the Carvin Holds..I agree with toejam

Thinking. I had a Charvel Model 4 from 1988 that I kept
until 1998 that had a very similar neck to the Holdsworth
style neck, I remember it having large frets and was great
for playing the spread out style chords AH does.

I eventually replaced it with a Soloist which wasn't the
same but if you find a Charvel Model 1 (single hum) from
1988 or so it should be similar.
