  • I am wondering where I can get a .....

I am wondering where I can get a 22 fret reverse headstock neck with no inlays and an ebony fretboard for a kelly project I am working on. I figured I would have to get it custom made, and I am just wondering where I guess. Does this sound like something a company can make, and does this sound like something that will even work? (the described neck with a kelly body.)

    Thanks.

I don't know if these will work, but

I thought all bolt-on/import Kellys were 24 frets?

You could always pick up a used DR2 and part it out. There's your 22 fret, no inlay, ebony/maple neck. Plus, it's a USA. Other than that, Warmoth makes great stuff.

[/ QUOTE ] Ya. The kelly i have has 24 frets, which is why I am wondering if putting a 22 fret neck on it is possible. Thanks for the responses though. I will check out warmoth

No, a 22 fret neck installed on a body designed for 24 won't intonate right. Notes higher up the fingerboard will be horribly out of pitch. Warmoth makes something that accomodates this difference, but I can't recall if it's for your situation or not. Why not just 24 frets?

Eh.. I had a kelly a while back, and as I recall I felt like I was reaching way out to the first few frets. Plus it felt like the kelly was very top heavy. I figured to fix these two problems, I would put a 22 fret neck on. That way, I would not have to reach as far, and the guitar might not seem as top heavy. Now I could be totally wrong in my reasoning, so please someone tell me if I am.

BTW, the guitar I am putting this neck on is a Kelly kx10d that my brother sold me for $20. Over the next few months I hope to make many mods to the guitar to make it look, feel and sound better. I will be adding a 22/24 fret reverse headstock neck with an ebony fretboard and no inlays, an EMG 81 and and EMG 60 (with the batteries and stuff)and replacing all the hardware from top to bottom with black hardware. I am thinking about sending it to GMW to have them put on a lightning sky graphic with a moon in the corner or something, otherwise I am just going to leave it black. Hopefully it will be pretty cool when I am finished.

Since no one else has explained it, I'll tell you that you're totally wrong and, more importantly, why.

The scale length is the distance from the nut to the bridge. The position of the frets is based on a recursive formula that divides the distance from the current position by a constant. To place the first fret, the distance is the scale length. When you move to the first fret, you subtract the distance between the nut and the first fret and divide again. Continue all the way up to place as many frets as you want.

As you can see, the position of the frets is fixed on the scale length of the guitar. You can't move them. Simply adding a 24-fret neck to a guitar designed for a 22-fret neck will put ALL of your frets off by the distance between those two extra frets. Unless you are going to move your bridge back, or reroute the neck pocket to move the neck forward, then the only notes that will ring true are the open strings.

Please don't attempt any of this. If you want a 22-fret guitar, sell this guitar and buy a different one.

Wait a minute! It might be possible...

What about a 22-fret neck that's 24.75" scale? I just measured my Soloist and the distance between frets 22 and 24 is exactly 0.75" so in theory a 22-fret 24.75" scale neck should be able to intonate properly.

Just get a 24 fret neck.

my Ke3 neck dives like no tomorrow until I moved the strap pins to one of the screw holes of the backplate, and the other one to the neckplate. No holes drilled at all and PERFECT balance. I seriously can't accept other shapes very well now cuz this kelly fits me so perfectly. And the way it kinda leans leans forward makes the playability great. Need to thank moshwitz for this!

Ya I will probably end just getting a 24 fret neck. It sounds like my original idea will not work and there are some things I can do to improve the comfort/playability of the guitar. Thanks for your input guys!
