  • Can any of you guys help me identify this guitar?

Hi, I'm new to the board, and I've been looking in my local classifieds for a nice Jackson or Charvel. (I want to buy a second guitar that is better suited for playing metal) I've found one, but the owner doesn't know what model it is. Can you guys help?

Looks like a DXMG. Perhaps with different pickups.
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

OK, that would make it a bit newer than I thought. Didn't they start making those in like 2000? (I was (incorrectly) thinking that this was a early 90's Japanese Jackson.)

The early 90's Japanese Jacksons would say "Professional" on the headstock. This is something more recent. I am also thinking DXMG.

The guy just replied to my email. It is, in fact, a DXMG.

          You guys are good. Thanks.

But I'll tell you, I'm pulling my hair out trying to decide what model I want! There are so many different models, years, factories, etc... It's making my head spin!

Originally, I was looking for a 1989 Charvel 750xl. That's what brought me to this site. (My good friend had one 15 years ago that I would have died for!) Now that I have the means, I'd love to find one. But I see that they are few and far between.

Keep in mind that this will be a secondary guitar for me. My PRS is my main axe, and always will be, as far as I can imagine.

But anyway, back to all those choices...

I know that I want to stick with a Japanese-made Jackson (or Charvel). Maybe I should be looking for a DX2?

Any feedback that you guys can give would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

          -Michael

DK-2 you mean? The DXMG is a very quality piece, as long you get a Japanese one (2002 or later). Ser# will start with 9.

              Yup, sorry, I meant DK2.

RacerX, Which guitar would be better quality, a DK2 or a DXMG?

Am I correct in thinking that the DK2 is the best current non-USA bolt-on?

The only major differences are the pickup combo (H-S-S vs H-H) and the headstock direction, so it'd be entirely your call. Since you've alreagy got the H-H with the PRS, you might want the DK2 simply for the H-S-S layout, if that's your thing.

Jackson's recent/current Japanese models usually have good wood (neck/body) with "passable" hardware. You can easily replace the pickups and trem with better stuff and have a great axe, but on other brands that skimp on the wood quality, you'd basically be putting good hardware on junk.

This is great information. Thank you.

I should let you guys know, that I am on a few other message boards for my other interests (Motorcycle racing, Computer Hardware, etc...), and newbies to those boards don't get the kind of straight forward answers that I've gotten here in this thread.
