  • How to pronounce "Charvel"

Anyone seen this? Wayne Charvel says his name, and it isn't what I thought it was.

Sounds like CH-ara-vel (strong "ch" sound)

I've been wondering how it's pronounced ever since I saw the name, but was afraid to post it!

It sounds like Wayne's saying Char-vel, like Chavez. But I think most people say Shar-vel. I guess he only sold the name to Grover and not the pronunciation.

                    Re: How to pronounce \"Charvel\"

A couple years ago, I called Wayne's shop to see about a body. I left a message, and Michael Charvel called me back. He left a message, and identified himself as Michael Shar-vel.

                        Re: How to pronounce \"Charvel\"

Wayne Charvel has a bunch of video clips on his website of him and Mike building a guitar from scratch. In it, he clearly says "Shar-Velle", the way everyone pronounces it. This Oz Fox video is a little slurry in quality though.

                          Re: How to pronounce \"Charvel\"

Years ago when I worked in a guitar shop a mexican guy came in, pointed to an Ibanez and asked (Insert thick mexican accent here) "Hey man, where is that guitar made?" I said "Japan." He responded with "Japan? With a name like E-bon-yez?" So now me and my friend refer to Ibenhad in with the spanish pronunciation.

                            Re: How to pronounce \"Charvel\"

Hoshino is the parent company of Ibanez that also owns Tama amongst other companies I can't remember right now. Ibañez is definitely a Spanish name but Hoshino took off the little squiggly accent above the N to get Ibanez. At least that's what I've read somewhere...

Based on this, I've never pronounced Ibanez the way most Americans pronounce it. I pronounce it "Eeeee-BAHH-nezz", or with the little squiggly accent, "Eeeee-BAHH-nyezz". I don't know a lot of Spanish, but that's how I assume it might be pronounced in Spanish. That's also probably why I never got the "I been had" thing for a long time...
