• Best practices when purchasing in classifieds..??

Greetings,
Since I can't view/post in classifieds just yet I am posting here.

What is the best practice when purchasing on the forum. On ebay, you have some insurance depending on your payment methods but honestly, I haven't really purchased much over $300 on ebay for fear of being scammed.

Just wondering, when buying from someone one this forum, what methods are best or what is the best way to go about spending what could easily be $1k plus on this site? I hope the question is clear. Thanks in advance.

same as ebay:

as a buyer - pay with a credit card

as a seller - accept postal money orders and verified/confirmed paypal payments

Or when among them.....just deal as friends...
There are probably better than 20 people on this board
that I wouldn't think twice about sending something to before recieving payment. And those are just the ones I know...

[/ QUOTE ]And when you give your word to another forum member that you have a deal, follow through with it or at least keep in touch no matter what the outcome might be. I have been on the bad end of this type of a situation where I waited to buy a guitar for 1 month only to find out through the board and not from the owner that it was sold to somebody else. Not a very nice feeling. So please be aware that people are counting on you to come through. Much respect.

I seriously appreciate the responces. Thanks! I was also curious about services that you may have used ie..SquareTrade etc..

The problem or fear is, when I go into a store, I can try and buy and even return. When you buy from a private source, you could be taken even from a genuine senior member of this forum. (I read stories of past problems)who could take your 2-5k and run. Not saying it would happen but it could.

Just curious becuase I love guitars and have many but my love for the old school playing has returned and I cant find doody in local stores or related that interest me so I am leaning towards building my j/c collection from people of this forum.

Once again, I really appreciate the responces and phenominal forum you guys provide for us. Thanks!

This is a good thread and the responses could probably be used as a faq for that area in the future

One other thing, don't let anyone talk you into comprimising on your terms. I get these requests all the time from dickheads on Ebay. Some recent dipshits:

"But dude I've go 12 positive feedbacks, why won't you take my personal check?"

"I've done 72 transactions and they've all gone flawlessly, why can't you ship to Israel if I pay you with an unverified Paypal account?"

I would also recommend getting a phone number and actually talking to the person. It is always a "little" more reassuring to be able to pick up the phone and confirm something...

Check the feeback forum and talk to members that dealed in the past with him, and check their ebay feedback.

I've done two deals here on the JCF. Both times were completed with cash in hand. One for parts (Jim Shine) and one for a Firebird (Kings31).... Flawless. I'm doing A 3RD this Saturday with DJROBA.

All that I can say is that, the people that I've done business with here are top-notch.

I think it all comes down to how comfortable you are with who you're dealing with. Once you get to know the guys on this forum, you'll feel more at home. Until then, of course, protect yourself.

You only need about 79 more posts to make it to the classifieds I'm slowly making my way there.

This is kind of off topic, but I enjoyed looking at what was for sale, what guys were looking for, etc., but I understand why the Admins would want to keep the newbs from posting their crap right away. All I can do is post when appropriate and bid my time. I'll probably never sell or buy anything, but it'll still be fun to look

it can be risky, but you can try to always:

1. get plenty of photos of the guitar
2. ask for references and verify them.
3. verify address and home phone, etc
4. pay via paypal/credit card
5. never do the "we're gonna send you a chasier's check for more than the cost of the item scam, the nigeria scam, the indonesia scam, etc.
6. are you paypal verified? you should be, it helps
7. ask lots of detailed questions, make an actual phone call, talk to the owner, get a vibe
8. work out a return policy IN ADVANCE so both partied know what to expect in case things don't go as expected.
