• New Jackson with Fret Problem

My friend ordered a PC1 from Music Zoo. When he got it the high E string buzzed at the first fret. He took it into a local dealer in VA who checked it out and told him the first fret was too low.

So he called Music Zoo and the owner wanted my friend to pay for shipping the guitar back to Music Zoo so his tech could fix it and pay again for shipping it back to VA.

Anyone else ever had this situation?

If it's a brand new PC1 then the Warranty applies and you'd have to check the warranty card in the case...I'd try to find a local authorized Jackson repair place to get the work done.

I don't understand how the string buzzed if the fret was too low? Too high maybe...but too low? That might cause the string to buzz at the 2nd-3rd fret when fretted on the low 1st fret, but the string buzzing from a low fret?

Just had the same issue with my SL1. Buzzed like a bubble bee. 1st fret was too low. My tech raised it a hair and all is well now.

DSS, I think he meant that when he fretted the 1st fret, the string buzzed. That would mean the fret was seated a little too deep.

If the string buzzes at the first fret when strking the open string, then the nut would need to be shimmed.

Exactly xeno.

I was really shocked because the PC1 is a high quality guitar.

He found a Fender dealer to do it.

He said the dealer complained to him that Fender does not always reimburse them enough on warranty repairs and it takes forever to get paid by Fender.

He is also charging my friend $80 to get it set up again. He is a novice and does not know how to set it up himself.

Pisses me off Music Zoo did such a poor job. The PC1 normally comes with 10's and he requested 9's be put on. So they must have done a crappy job resetting the thing.

Re: New Jackson with Fret Problem

This is the same thing that happened to me with the JJ1 that I got from VWall. Anything on the first fret buzzed like crazy because the 2nd fret wasn't level. Also, the fret ends stuck out a LOT - way more than would have happened just in traveling for a couple days. VWall said I could ship it to him (at my expense) and he'd fix it. Instead I went to a local Fender/Jackson warranty repair guy that did a great job. It should never have left the factory the way it did and it certainly shouldn't have left the dealer the way it did.

I'd send it back... and I sure-n-hell wouldn't pay for return shipping. I'd make the dealer eat the return shipping for sending me out a defective axe in the first place. YMMV.

Re: New Jackson with Fret Problem

This is interesting....I just got a new DK1 and the frets were hanging over edge of the binding. It would rip your fingers off if you tried to play fast. I took a finishing file to it and fixed the frets. Plays fine now, but that guitar should never have got out of the factory like that. It would seems Jackson quality is slipping as of late. Especially considering that the fret work on my SL1 and DK2LE are excellent. I wonder what is going on?

You know what...I have seen this on a few of the new Charvel USA standard models in stores in the NY area.

Wow I hate to hear these stories.

Jackson has been known for their quality.

I wonder if this happens to a small percentage of their guitars and the percentage has not changed over the years or if they in fact do have a more recent quality issue.

hmmmmmm.........

There have always been some issues here nad there.
But in the past year, I have heard about (and seen) more issues than at any time before it. And that includes just before the sellout, when everyone thought it couldn't get any worse.

The only problem I've had w/ one of my SLATQH's new was that one of the string slots was cut a bit deep.My dealer just filled that one slot and re-cut the nut (ouch!)...maybe you'll want to look at that possibility being as though it's an easy fix....just a thought.
