Re: Fellow Metalheads, How Do You Tune?

Personally, I think any tuning below c# sounds pretty much like a full bag of shit, with a few exceptions. I teach lessons, and every week a couple of students come in with their guitars tuned to c or b, because it 'sounds heavy"
Its a complete catastrophe. But Im a professional, I can rise above it. LOL

It just matters what your style is. Listen to Meshuggah and tell me they would sound better in E. It just wouldn't sound as heavy. Low tunings work better with some people, but most just fuck it up and make it sound like shit I agree. You can make C or B sound great and not like ass tonewise with the right settings. I like C# because it works well with both my faster or slower groovier riffs. I guess I mostly play in B, because it just works and feels better for most of the ideas I have in my head. Think Amon Amarth and Carcass and you will get the idea.

When I first started playing guitar I tuned down to Eb just for the fact it sounded better to my ears than E-standard. Don't know why like I said just felt and sounded better. Would you tell a pianist he's stupid if his pieces were mostly played on the mid to lowest registered keys?

seriously, tuning is a preference, E standard is the basic way, but I don't like it at all really.

A = 440, amen.

To each his own, but I pretty much despise alternate tunings. Only use them when necessary. i.e., Singer is a pantywaste or bass player is too frustratingly stupid to understand the concept that playing the song in the same position but standard tuning is just doing the song in another key. Re: Fellow Metalheads, How Do You Tune?

I used to tune to Eb when I couldn't play that good because the strings were easier to fret and bend. Now its always E cause my ear is trained for certain pitches at certain frets. Also the strings on my DK1 are so esy to play if I tuned down any it would be like playing cooked spaghetti!

tune in E and dropD. on my SG i sometimes used a weird tuning (CGDGBe dropC/standard)
You can't play no muthfuggin' arpeggios on a tuba...

Mostly I use standard tuning. However, I do use Drop-D on occasion.
Jackson: DK1
Charvel: CS (CSB), SD (RGF), SD (Bullseye), SD '83 (HRF)

Re: Fellow Metalheads, How Do You Tune?

Fusion Std : dropped A# with 13s (A#, F, A#, D#, G, C)
JJ4 : same
Epiphone Les Paul: same, but going back to standard with 10s
JDX-94 : standard with 10s

The band I play with the most uses dropped A# but for my own stuff I like to tune the bottom string back up to C. The standard tuned guitars are for another band I play in and if I ever go back to lessons.

I used to play in B but I find it slightly muddier than C. To my ears C gives you a tightness of sounds that makes things clearer and more concise compared to playing in B.

still use standard tuning, will occasionally drop it a 1/2 or whole step, and drop d when neccessary...considering a DK27D in the near future....
Bon Jovi is like a frozen Coca Cola.. It's cool, it's crunchy, but when all is said and done it is still pop....

Eb for my powermetal band, D for my Deathmetal solo project.

Same here. I just use the good old standard. I will sometimes use drop d , but not much anymore.

Our band tunes to d, and we jokingly auto-tune our singer to growl differently according to different chords and voicings.
