  • Soloist neck thru - scalloped pocket or not

I've been looking at ebay auctions of Soloist.

Here is pictures of one without a scallop.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...03840&rd=1

Here is the web site for someone selling a Professional (Japan) with the neck scallop.

    http://www.ritzfamilypublishing.com/...es/jackson.htm

Is one better than the other? I have a bare wood ESP Soloist sytle, and I could route the neck pocket before painting (if it's a good idea).

    Thanks,

    Don

imho you don't need the scallop on the neck thru, i find it very comfortable, and i have all the reach i could need on my soloist

Yup, definitely better access with scalloped neck.

+1, it definately helps and is more comfortable when reaching for those higher frets.

Yeah, I have the scallop on my 7 string Soloist, and it helps a lot in the high frets...

This could be personal preference. I think that the soloist is by design easy access (especially when compared to a standard strat with a block four bolt heel). That said, I do recognze that the access is even better on an RR or KV b/c the extra wood is just not there to even to potentially get in the way.

The purist would say no scallope. I would recommend trying to lay hands on both and then you will know for sure what you like.

they are most likely made of different woods. i would check the year with the catologe for each. but most likely the usa model is alder, and the jap is poplar.

No, the USA model is also most likely poplar, as well, since it was made in the late '80s. Jackson didn't begin to use alder as a standard wood until the '90s.

As far as the neck heel, I think the scalloped version provides slightly better access, but it's not dramatically different--you can definitely reach the high frets even on the old '80s-style neck heel.

It makes a world of difference. Of the two neck thru's I have I vastly prefer my BC Rich Archtop because its scalloped. In fact their scallop is done better than Jacksons, its got totally uninhibited access to those lower frets. If you are able definitely go for the scallop.

                        Chris,

Can you post a picture of the BC Rich scallop? My ESP is bare wood, and I'm going to router a scallop myself.

I don't think Vs need(or have for that matter) an extra scallop.
