I'm curious to know where you guys keep your guitars when you are not playing them. The reason I ask is that I have a few hanging on a wall and some in their cases. I was told that hanging is the worst thing you can do long term. Especially with a bolt-on neck. I think it's cool to display them but I don't want to cause any harm or stress. I also don't like putting them in the case every time I want to change. What say you?

Re: Where Are Your Guitars?
I've got a bunch, and almost always keep 'em in the case after I'm done. Sometimes I'll leave one or two out on a secure stand, so I can pick them up frequently. Hanging them on a wall propertly (such as out of direct sunlight, dust-free environment, temp/humidity controlled and no possiblilty of dropping them) wouldn't be overly harmful, IMHO. My stands hang the bass (orr guitar) by the neck and I haven't seen any harmful effects. Usually the biggest problem in leaving them out is dust.

3 on a hanging stand (bass, NASL, Warrior project with no case) - 2 bolt ons and a neckthrough.
7 in cases around the room, including the ones I'm trying to sell (I don't play them when they're actively for sale, unless someone wants an audio demonstration or video/pic of how it looks when in use).
I've heard that about hanging as well, particularly about set necks. No one has ever produced photographic evidence of such a phenomenon, but still the legend rolls on.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Re: Where Are Your Guitars?
24 stands!? Christ! Are they in an airplane hanger? That's a lot of space. Mine are not in any sunlight and it's temp controlled. It just made me think about the body weight constantly pulling on the neck joint. Although, if this were true, many guitar shops would have a ton of f'd up guitars. Who knows. The person that told me is credible so it did make me think."You have a pud..your wife has a face. Next time she bitches..I'd play cock bongos on her cheeks..all four of them!" - Bill Z.

Re: Where Are Your Guitars?
My guitars are all over the damn place. I know, that's bad. I just don't have my basement finished, which is where I intend to move everything when it's done. I have some in cases, some on stands, several in the basement, and a few in the bedroom. Once the basement is done, I will have around 3 or 4 on wall hangers, and the rest will be in their cases.

Re: Where Are Your Guitars?
the high value ones are stored in their OHSC, the mid value are in special made wood cabinets (18 pcs / cabinet), the low value are on 9pc share stands, the play-of-the-week guitar on a seperate stand.. and the ones under construction lying around
I had a very bad experience about them hanging on a wall, if for a long time that is.. the headstock becomes a permanent stresspoint due to the fact that the weight is on that.. and after a while, some finishes seem to react with the stuff on the wall hanger.. so I got rid of them.

Re: Where Are Your Guitars?
I keep all but 1 or 2 in cases. I leave my classical on a stand 99% of the time and on occasion I bring out an electric and put it on a stand for a short time. Right now I have my PCS out, man I love that guitar! Anyway, I used to keep many out at one time, but I noticed that increased the opportunity for nicks and dings. I have a few fiddles with dings on them that wouldn't have happend if they were in a case. Also, I live in AZ so the dry climate can have adverse effects on some guitars. I have an nice Nowland steel string that I always keep in the case with a humidifier.

This is bullshit
The force on the body/neck-joint caused by the tension of the strings is about 15-25 times higher (depends on the string type and diameter) than the force caused by the guitar's own weight when it hangs.
I have some of my guitars on wallhangers (the ones in the rehearsal room) and some in the case (the ones at home).
