Re: Single volume and no tone, or should I drill?

I wouldn't drill a new hole in it. Get a concentric pot instead. If not, just leave the 1 volume. Tone controls are totally overrated and hardly ever used for metal.

"Tone" is something better shaped at your amp and/or with effects. Tone controls on guitars are largely useless IMHO.

...Do I "never" use them? Yeah, sure, once in a while. Not too often, though. If they were to magically disappear from every one of my guitars, I wouldn't miss 'em much.

Ok, no tone control wins. I have to admit I don't use tone controls either. But the EMG81 tends to be a little bright, especially with the 18 volts.

Budman - thanks for the heads up on the KE3 issues. Hopefully I'll get lucky and won't have any. And...this axe was brought to you care of Dave's parts. I used his oversized trim ring to perfectly mount the EMG81 in there. Thanks!

Don't drill the hole and wire it for 18 volts. DONE bro.

If 81 is too bright for you, why don't you give 85 a shot? I did it a year ago, never looked back since.

I agree. That's why I'd go for a concentric pot. Even if you don't really use it, it will still yield a tiny bit of a warmer sound than if just only having the volume knob there. When I had my Hamer with dual 81s, I usually rolled back the tone to halfway so it wasn't so bright, then used it full up for leads.
Or just get an 85.

I still insist on the concentric volume/tone pot as I originally suggested in the first reply of this thread, as well as a few other JCFers' identical suggestion, especially if you're finding the EMG-81 bright. Or, do what I've been doing lately for tone... turn down your amp's treble. There was a time a few years ago when I used to crank the treble, then had it on 5, now I like it a little less than that with a touch more mids and bass. Nothing really wanders far from 5 for me any more.

I'm sorry, but I'm kind of (retarded) like Spinal Tap - everything has to be on 11.

The EMG81 might be a little bright, but with both pickups in the middle position, it sounds great. Even if I put in the concentric pot, I know I'll never use it. Actually the brightness of the 81 goes well with this basswood body. I'm sure that soft wood eats away at the treble.

Like John said - DONE. I just need two 9 volt battery mounts and 6 backplate screws for the trem cover, and this project is finished!

Next project - Blacked out KE3 with a DK-1 neck and EMG 85/60.

personally I never ever use the tone knobs..

the volume button has more use.. on/off and you can do volume swells.. and if you have two volumes you can do the tremolo/stutter effect

conclusion.. don't drill!

Hey Newc ! I use the volume control! The tone is alway full on. You ever hear of Dymamics you know where you go from soft to loud.

Of course I have - ever hear of Dynamics where you go from mellow to bright by turning the Tone knob for something other than a Mid-Sweep circuit?
