The very foundation of Charvel/Jackson history had only stratheads to choose from.

If there is any ONE company that should be allowed to keep using the Fender Strathead shape, it should be Charvel.

I think they look nice. I'd rather have a pointy, but Jackson/Charvel stratheads always had a unique feel of their own, and they do play sweet.

this is not what I was after at all. I am very serious in trying to understand what the big deal is with this headstock. I mean it's not even Charvels design, it's Fenders. I just don't get it. Ya it looks nice on certain types of bodies, and I get the whole pre pro early San Dimas valuable (low numbers made deal) but beyond that I really don't get it. Why something that is brand new (PC-1 for example or a new GMW) is more desirable with a strat head is beyond me. I mean a GMW with a strathead IS NOT a PRE Pro San dimas Charvel. I would think alot of jackson/charvel players couldn't give two shits about the headstock design. Of all the image stuff connected to a guitar headstock is probably what I care about least. Does the guitar play well, is it well constructed those are the two most important things. No doubt image is important and thats what a custom guitar is for. I think Jackson will eventually offer the strat head on custom shop charvels because it is part of their history. However I don't think it in any way demeans the SLS or pointy charvels.

Totally bias rant follows..
I love the sls headstock, its got both standard pointy and reverse headstock lines on it, and it gives a straight pull. It also gives the superlight a different flavour and sets it apart.
I think the strathead is important as its one of the most recognisable and important designs in guitar history. Also it was the base guitar of this empires history, its where it started and how it was built. The fact Jackson can use it and not a silly copy, further demonstrates to the market that Jackson/Charvel is the real deal, bar none. Lets not forget the 2nd most copied head in music, the pointy itself! Jackson/Rhoads designs have been the only majorly successful designs in rock/metal guitar world imo, and since this thread is all about shitting people over their opinions, have some ammo; fuck gibson, and fuck esp! Ok...the reason the strathead on a Charvel is important to me is Warren DeMartini. Look how many of the players we revere that have played a strathead over the years. IMHO that's the biggest reason why they're important to some of us, well...me anyway.

I like the 3x3 headstock of the SLS. I think it's sweet.

I like the 6 inline pointy, I think it's sweet.

I think the Strat headstock looks awesome. I hate the tele headstock.

I LOVE the PRS headstock, I think it looks awesome. I think the Gibson headstock looks gay.

That said, I don't know why I like Strat headstocks...they just look sweet to me.

It's so messed up, if I ever own a San Dimas, I HAVE TO HAVE a Strat head. If I've got a strat head, I've GOT to have a MAPLE fretboard. Just the way it's supposed to look to me, I suppose.

Ok, so back to the Shathead and "feel" - if you mean the BACKSHAPE and FRETBOARD RADIUS, that can be duplicated on anything from a Korean Dano to a PRS to a pine plank, no matter what the headstock looks like, or even if it has a headstock at all (like Steinbergers, or 30% of Jacksons shipped via UPS during the busy season [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img])

If you're referring to some magical mystery hippie headtrip ejaculatory fantasy (read: "mojo"), then you're blowing smoke up your own ass by not admitting that you want one mostly because you imagine you have some sort of ethereal/intangible/spiritual/psychological connection to 1982 and/or the players you idolized at the time like Lynch, Halen, and DiMartini.
If you DO freely admit that, then get over it - 1982 is loooooong gone, and the Fender headstock is as it always was - a Fender Trademark in both the legal sense and the realm of visual perception, and belongs on Fenders. Yes, I know Charvel made a ton of Shathead guitars - people handed him money to do that. If they paid him to build a guitar shaped like a penis with a device on the head that could squeeze a mayonnaise packet so it looked like spurting jizz, he'd have done that and you'd all be clamoring for a Dickhead Charvel instead of a Strathead [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

As for the SLS head - it's far better than the San Dimas/PC-1/"pseudo-Strat" head, and fits the Jackson Pointy Motif on certain models muuuuuch better than a regular/reverse Jackson pointy.
It doesn't work on a Rhoads, because the Rhoads will always look better with a traditional Jackson pointyhead, but the King V is visually more balanced with a 3x3 head.
The Warrior looks like a futuristic fighter jet/spaceship as it is, and a standard non-reverse Jackson pointyhead fits that design, especially with the slanted pickups and fretboard edge of the 1990 model.
However, since the change was made to two straight hums and straight board edge (either of which change the appearance to being less aerodynamic), the SLS head gives it that ICBM appeal [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

james, it's cool, but you're right , because back in the
day(80s') I was strictly a Les Paul guy, I never got the Strathead addiction.
I got out of the music scene before floyds were freely available, so I hated Fender Strats, I thought they sucked.
Razor brings up a good point about so many of the shredders of the era playing Charvel Straheads.
I mean if Warren D was playing a Crossed Swords Les Paul and EVH was playing a B/W striped Les Paul, and
Randys V was a Gibson V would we all be over on a Gibson forum

As far as shapes of "knockoff" Stratheads, for me it's got to be THE original shape or nothing. I can't recall seeing any modification attempts by any manufacturer that looked "right". IMO, even the later Fender large Strathead design didn't look right.
