• personal J/C preferences

I'm old school so I associate and prefer Charvels with regular strat-shaped bodies and dot inlays, whereas I associate the more radical body designs with Jackson, as well as the more ornate fretboard inlays, sharkfins, etc.

I know Jacksons are great guitars, but I personally prefer Charvels only. this goes back a long way for me and I just like the Charvel designs better. to me they are more classic looking. my view actually, and unbeknownst to me, as I've been of this mind for years, dovetails exactly with why Grover put his name on that wild new guitar for RR, the assymetrical V, and not Charvel's name (I only learned this history just recently - didn't know much detail about the companies, etc until coming here).

I prefer the Charvel strat bodies over the Jackson soloist bodies. I like classic looking stuff and I guess that is why. so I'm not into Charvels with dinky bodies or skarkfins, etc. they just don't look "Charvelish" to me. sounds dumb I guess, but there you have it. I think Charvels should be Charvels, and Jacksons should be the ones that get the wilder bodies and inlays, as that is their legacy.

I'm not posting my thoughts to rankle anyone here, just to say this is what I've always thought about these guitars, and to see what everyone else's general impressions are as well.

I just can't get into the wilder inlays. dots for me thanks. I may buy a guitar with block inlays some day, but it won't be my reason for selecting one.

another one - I prefer the black or natural headstocks to painted ones. not sure why. I guess the one exception would be George Lynch's kamakaze ESP, that headstock looks cool painted.

and I don't favor pointy guitars, the wilder designs that look like weapons of war just turn me off. it's cool that others like em, don't get me wrong, they just aren't my thing.

after I got my Model 2 in 1987, I wanted a Jackson as well for a while. Mustaine and Marty made me really want one. but that has faded, and if I buy another guitar right now it will be a Gibson flying V 67 reissue. I kind of want some variety, and that will round out my collection nicely.

so what are your pet peeves or preferences about these killer instruments?

Yea I am not very enamored of the strat guitars myself, however I don't really tie myself down to much to asthetics. If the guitar looks good all that matters is how it plays. Unless its like pink or something. Obviously I tend to favor the unusual shapes, as the Death Angel is my favorite guitar body style.

Everything you said, but gotta include the pointy headstocks as well. For me its the oiled maple necks, not the painted, even tho there are a few rosewood painted headstock Sam Demas guitars out there.

yeah I forgot about graphics, I like most of those, and Jackson is doing some killer ones. that skeletons ball one was fucking sick. and the graveyard and pile o skulls are badass too. I loved Warren's French Charvel. that was my all time favorite back in the day.

Re: personal J/C preferences

I want one of everything, and two of the coolest stuff.
Charvels and Jacksons of all variety's shapes and sizes, from a wild rr or warrior custom shop to a san dimas charvel, and everything in between. I used to love my jackson dr3's and was a happy man. Then I wanted to know more about the brand I sold everyone on and found this site. Now I must crush kill and destroy until I have amassed the ultimate collection of jackson/charvels! And then I'd still be looking, "what you got for trade?"....

Re: personal J/C preferences

How it looks is less important to me than how it plays. I prefer flat D profile necks. I like single hums and dinky bodies, or KV, Rhoads, Warrior, not as much for how they look but how they feel when you play them.

Pretty is nice, but if it doesn't have those features, I don't find myself playing them often.

Re: personal J/C preferences

It's wierd - I have one custom order in, and another possibly on the way, and both are neck thru Jacksons, with ebony boards, sharkfins, binding, non recessed Floyds, gold hardware, one with a quilt top, the possible order with a graphic.....However (and this may make me sound totally retarded), when it comes to playing, as first choice I always end up grabbing my GMWs, Charvel 25th or GX Bullseye which are all maple boarded bolt-ons with fewer frills.....

I guess this means I like all of them, so it'd be easier to say what I don't like, or at least wouldn't buy:

Vintage trems (OK on the 25th, but that's enough for me)
Cream pickups
Warriors
Kellys
Death Angel
Super light Soloists
Jazz R series
JJ series
Scary metal / devil type graphics inc Pile of Skulls and Blood Drip with Skull, though plain blood drip is cool (?!)
Too many pickups on a detailed graphic (spoils the appearence to me!)
AT1 headstock
Old style PC1 headstock
Battery compartments (can't see the point)
Rhoads Scratchplates (spoil the look - stupid I know, but true!)

I think that's enough insight into my tastes for now!
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

Re: personal J/C preferences

I like Vs and RRs, pointy-headstocks, sharkfins and neck-through or set-in construction. Bolt-on is not my cup of neck-joints.

Re: personal J/C preferences

In the past I've had GAS for many a guitar, mainly KVs, but that has settled down over the years, as I have discovered what works (=feels and looks) best to me:

Archtop superstrats. I love them.

My Soloist Archtop Professional and my DKMGT get almost all of the playing time now, my pointy shaped guitars only when I need a guitar to carry in a gigbag.
I want 24 frets, archtop body, inlays everthing BUT dots, pointy headstock, string-thru bridge.
So the only guitar I really have GAS for now is the Charvel 750XL (with string-thru), I NEED one of these!
And I'm definitely gonna try a COW DK6 if I find one in a store.
