Don't worry - I'll smack her if it comes to that. You do not sell guitars to buy shoes. You skimp on food to buy shoes! ~Mrs Tekky 06-03-08~

        Re: DIY Soldering

Hope it helps everyone! Any questions feel free to ask.

As for that Cold wHeat... TOTAL JUNK. I bought one at Home Depot just to try it out, see what the fuss was about. As someone else explained, it has a two prong electrode as a "tip" and is made of VERY fragile material. To activate it, you have to complete the circut. This causes an ark of electricity which "melts" the solder... thing is, it barely works. Without any real heat, the tool is utterly useless... it is powerfull enough so solder the equivalant of about two brad nail heads together. Problem is, if you use this on ANY circut board, your sure to fry it... after all, its sending a jolt of electricity! I cant believe they havent been sued yet for false advertisment. Search on google "cold head sucks" and youll find alot of the same thing I just wrote.

You know, I always take my soldering skills for granted, you'd be surpised how many people do NOT know how to do it.

RobRR you must be a serious solder jockey to recommend the metcal system... Thats some serious hardware there !!!!

Cold heat both blows and sucks at the same time... its only amazing feature

Thanks for the opinions about the Cold Heat. I'll just borrow my uncle's soldering iron sometime. I really only need to do one pickup swap, that's it. Not worth me spending whatever money for such a rare event.

RobRR said in another topic that he works for Lockheed... probably why he's qualified to get a special sticky topic in the Tech Q&A section!

It was a great article, and even though I thought I knew most of soldering 101, Rob managed to teach me a few things. It will be "Lockheed grade" soldering in my guitars from here on!

Thanks for the writeup Rob! Very much appreciated!

RobRR, you work on AEGIS? I used to work on the controlling software for developing and running TPS's for 3 or 4 of the test systems - TSM-192 is the only rack I can remember. It's been a while...
