I know a lot of people love JB's but to my ears they sound like their farting.. at least the way I play.. ROTF!

        1. Duncan Custom. Just enough output, and a good all around pickup. Nice mids, cutting high end. Great for metal.

        2. JB. Slightly higher output, but smoother sounding than a Custom. Not quite as bright either, more midrangy. Very good for bright sounding bodies (maple).

Dunc Distortion Parallel Axis Trembucker is my choice. I even use it on non-trem guitars, because it tracks true when you do wild bends (which suits my personal style)

from my experience, if could put ANY pickup in, i'd try something "unusual." i'd put a 1950's era gibson P-90 in there. i always thought that they are the best pickup ever. (think mountain's leslie west, late "live at leeds" townsend, early santana, george thorogood....) something about canceling out the "hum" when making a humbucker cancels out some tone, some balls. you only hear the hum when you stop playing, so i wouldn't stop!!! This is true, but I have the P90's covered in my 1962 SG Special. And yes, playing stuff like Metallica (not quite passages) they work extremely well.

First choice would be a Duncan Custom but a Custom 5 or Custom Custom are a close second!

EMG 85, 18v configuration. Smooth, heavy, dark, lots of distortion, lots of headroom...

                      DiMarzio Evolution.
Lots of gain, singing sustain, very touch sensitive.

                        Full Shred
Hot enough for anything, you could split it as well... Sounds killer. I hear it's quite bright in an all Alder/maple guitar but that it's where it's at its best. On my basswood bodies guitare it really sounds amazing. Not overly bright nor warm. Splendid.

I would say SD Custom custom (I like alnico II pickups) but also an EMG85 won't be a wrong choice...

Dimarzio X2n. Hot. The way a 1 hum guitar should sound. Crunchy, again the way a 1 Hum guitar should sound. Balls. Again... The way a 1 hum...etc. And you could use a push pull volume pot to coil tap it and that will make it fender clean. Also, It is a rail pickup so you will get even string articulation and you can back the volume off to get a good "less" powerful tone. ]

The Super D you already have is a great pickup too but that to my ears sounds very much like the Duncan Distortion with less highs. You could just put a capacitor on pot it to change that and it would be much cheaper than buying a new pickup.

I am a Dimarzio fan anyway. I have lots of Duncans too but the wires are thicker on Dimarzio pickups and from all the pickups I have had from both Duncan and Dimarzio, The Dimarzio pickups seem to sound better to my ears.
