• So whats with the "new" neck profiles?

Maybe the fact that Ive been out of the "new" guitar loop for a while, I dont know. But at GC, I was playing a DKMG today, which is the neck I wanted to use for my new project, and I was also messing around on a DXMG too. These necks seem ALOT thicker than my '96 DR3 and '99 RR3R, and are also much less finished... too dry for my taste. Whats with this? When did Jackson change the neck profile to a thicker neck? I dont like it, not one bit. So now either I get a DKMG neck and reprofile it to how I like it and refinish it, or start looking elsewhere.

Different Jacksons have different profiles, there isn't any one "right" profile. Take a soloist for instance.. there's a standard profile and a speed neck ..

Even the new RR3's and DR3's have the thicker profile. I know the higher end soloists have different profiles, but is that an option on bolt-on imports? I did notice though, that the guitats with the 3+3 headstocks (dont remember the model) had the thinner neck that I liked.

The newer (2000 and up) bolt on necks are definitely thicker than the early-mid 90s profiles.

The one best thing about them being so inexpensive and not glossy finished is that you can reshape them to suit your taste more easily.

I didnt think they were "thick", but than again when I think "thick", I think of a Les Paul or my Hamer Archtop neck.

I would suggest looking for an older neck or reprofile the DKMG neck.

KMaynard I thought the import necks where a standard profile as a means of eliminating excess costs & speed up pproduction time... although I could always be wrong.

My 96 soloist is way thinner than any of the New soloist I played.

Re: So whats with the \"new\" neck profiles?

There is at least 5 different neck profiles that I've felt on USA Custom soloists and other Jacksons...

.725/.800 flat spot "D" profile
.750/.810 Dinky Standard
.775/.835 Speed Neck
.790/.850 Soloist Standard
(no measurement) FAT LOG (early Rhoads/LP type?)

And I'm sure there are many between, as you can order them to any dimension you wish, but I've had 3 customs with the .725/.800 "D" neck, which is my favorite. Round near the binding, with a flat spot on the direct back of the neck, unlike all the other profiles which are C shaped.

I haven't a clue as to how many different USA Select backshapes or Import backshapes there are, I'm a custom shop snob
