couldn't disagree more. i look at back designs like i would look at at a back tattoo; why do it if you'll never see it? the designs aside, i've always disliked a small logo or whatever in front with a big design on the back.

That's what I think. Shirts with those little logos remind me of work shirts with name badges, like the kind you see fast-food employees wearing. I dunno, I feel like I should be doing something productive in shirts like that. Making fries perhaps.
Big logos rule wherever they are because people can see them and don't have to stick their noses in your chest to read them (not that that is always bad ).
I can totally picture Sully looking down at his cool Charvel tee with the giant van on the front, admiring it all day. Hee hee.

I think they are all pretty cool but I agree with what mike was saying about have a proper vintage american car with hot rod flames on the back.

Whatever you do you will definately need plain tee shirts with just the logo.

[/ QUOTE ]

So we can TIE-DYE them!!
Kidding... I'm kidding. Maybe.

I am really feeling the tye-dye now! Oh YEAH!!
Dave, bro, you betcha! I'm BADASS at the tye-dye! I'll do yours pink, since its your favorite color and all.
But maybe Charvel will love the tye-dye idea so much they'll do them in all sorts of groovy colors. The van should be tye-dyed.. oh yeah. I'm feelin' the van too.

Re: Charvel wants your opinion!

#3 is the best I think. I'm not much for the odd colors, give me black, gray, red, blue, purple & call it good. The van would go w/ the tye-dye idea. As far as big pictures front or back, small logo front or not, I really dont care.

Re: Charvel wants your opinion!

From a purely aesthetic viewpoint, they're all really well designed, capturing a retro look. The type and imagery is very well done.

However, Charvel and Jackson have never had a consistent brand image. Look at all the catalogs and advertising year to year. There's zero consistency in imagery, message, voice and tone. It looks like each year someone different was hired to do the marketing work, some with skill, some with poor skils. I'd go so far as to say that the marketing and advertising of both companies wasn't very well planned and there was a complete lack of vision at the highest levels over what message the company should be communicating. Before Fender took over, the website of Jackson I think was an embarassment compared to those of other guitar companies.

I think the "new" retro look and feel spo many companies are doing these days is actually getting old. House Industries, the font company, has been doing "retro" stuff for years, and some of this looks like what House was doing a while back.

I think trying to capitalize on nostalgia and the company's heritage is a good thing, but I'm not sure this execution is appropriate. I want something to take me by surprise and these shirts don't really do it. Also, the imagery has NOTHING to do with Charvel, except that some of the imagery was around when the company started. I think they're a good first pass but I think they could be stronger. Aiming for a younger audience is not a bad thing but I think in this case Charvel is trying to capitalize on a trendy look that I think got old a few years ago.

For what it's worth, the lowrider bike looks waaaay ghetto; I think that imagery is already associated with rappers and not guitars that are predominently played by a rock and metal audience.

My advice to Charvel and Jackson: figure out what your brand is all about then communicate that vision through the appropriate imagery and messaging.

Re: Charvel wants your opinion!

This is a great try but the problem with these is that they all look like something you could have bought at the Gap or American Eagle or whatever. I love this old school stuff- I like all kinds of shit form the 70s but it's been done and not cutting edge at all. All these designs are a fad and you missed it by a year or 2 (as I said you can verify this by finding designs like this at the GAP).

the best guitar t-shirt I ever had was an Ibanez effects tshirt. It was the front of a 57 Chevy with the hood open and 2 pedals where the engine would be. It said "Supercharge Your Sound". That was hot.

It was an ebarassment then? I cringe every time I go there and see that nasty washed up porn star posing with otherwise nice guitars.

Ah...the porn star...

My guess is that Fender bought Jackson because they knew Jackson built a quality product and had a strong following despite crappy marketing and almost zero time in the spolight over the last few years.

Fender probably told Jackson they needed a splash and they probably made a hasty decision to go with a porn star on the site and in some of the marketing. It's another example, to me at least, showing that Jackson still hasn't quite figured out how to market themselves. At least from a design standpoint, the site is more consistent in the past and seems to have sections updated more frequently. I think the new NAMM pics and the custom shop work in progress pics are a step in the right direction. But the question still remains: are they going to try to market with supposedly "hot" women (sorry Jackson, Dean has been doing it longer and better and BC Rich has jumped on the bandwagon too) or are they going to try something completely unique to the company.
