• Let's pretend -You're in charge of the custom shop

Imagine - you win a gonzo contest. The grand prize is that you get to run the custom shop for a little while. But there's a catch...

You have to design a limited edition guitar run of at least 50 pieces. And no personal dreamy custom shop one-offs - it has to have broad enough appeal for dealers to want in, and make it commerically successful. Think along the lines of prior multi-piece runs: original Rhoads, polka dot Vs, Charvel stratheads, etc.

What would you build? Full specs, please. (And assume that the current "rules" still apply. i.e., no Gibson body shapes, etc.)

This might be fun.

Did someone say "Gonzo"?

Two hum Shannon Soloist (SHS2). Hands down. Same specs as the SHS1 but with two hums and maybe a 3-way switch instead of the 5-way blade switch. I'm not wasting money on a custom shop SHS2 for such a small spec change.

I'd do a revised version of the Limited `88. No denim blue finish this time though. Single DiMarzio PAF Pro with coil tap. Quilted maple Mocha finish (ala PC1) over mahogany with natural binding around the edges...but with the recess behind the trem bound instead of the butt-end of the guitar. Output jack (top-mount ala Stealth or Ibanez S-series) and volume (push-pull for coil tap) would be in the recess, flush mounted so the cable end and volume couldn't accidentally be bumped while playing. Gold hardware including OFR. Reverse finish-matched headstock with gold Jackson logo and gold MOP reverse sharkfins on a 24-fret ebony board.

Miss anything?

I find myself wanting more in the ways of neck profiles. A H/s/s or H/H/ or H doesn't really matter if I don't like how the neck feels.

Then there's no question about it: A 24-fret, rear-routed Rhoads with one humbucker, Floyd (gold) and Firestorm gain booster. Available in black with a few option choices of bevel color.

floyded 24 Fret, non pickguard 1 hum Rhoads with TB-4 in the bridge. 1 volume and a pickup booster (possibly the EMG PA2), ebony fb,oiled maple neck, alder body.

Paint: yellow bevels/yellow pins (gold hardware on these two), green pins (black hardware), on a black body.

Yes, we need an Alexi Laiho RR that badly because ESP won't sell his sig here in the US.

Choice of two here:

EITHER:
HRF singlehum, strathead Charvel with a maple board and a floyd.

OR:
Single hum, Koa Soloist w rev head and gold hardware
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

50 pieces? Hmm, that pretty much rules out anything that isn´t a Soloist, Dinky or Rhoads. I´m thinking something along the lines of that old PCS Exotic Dinky... I´d make some Dinkys with basic USA-specs as far as hardware and features go (OFR, Duncans, 24 frets), but make them out of some spectacular woods with classy features like body binding and gold hardware. It´d be like a high-end Dinky of sorts. I mean, it seems to work just fine for guys like Suhr, Moore and Anderson. I´m pretty sure a run of 50 would land my idea well below the aforementioned companies in price.

Hmm, I'm not in that traditional stuff but...

I'd go for an all mahagony RR. Gloss-finish, 22frets, ebony with sharkfins and string-thru...and maybe 25.00 scale.
Kind of a SG just in RR shape.

I guess this would sell...nowadays.

PS: that Dk1-b looks good...I think reverse sharkies always look good on maple FB.
But what are your specs? Go-for-sure maple alder?
