I've always heard about how archtop acoustics are literally the most difficult type of guitar to build so I was anxious to see it but I never expected this. There aren't many guitars I would shell out huge bucks for but that might be one of them. Truly stunning! Whats she made out of? The sides look to have some sort of figuring but I can't tell if its quilt or flame or something else entirely.
Chris,
It is al curly maple. The backs and sides are highly figured. There is a split wedge of quilted maple in the back of the guitar. The top is Sitka spruce. I used Bob Benedetto's plans for the most part when building this. I have around a 150 hours into building it. It is a very laborious process building these. I have been a fan of archtop guitars since I started building in the early 80's. This is my 4th archtop and about my 40th guitar over all. The next one I am building is made from 200 year old figured red wood. It will be all natural.

So how does one go on the waiting list for a Learnedetto?

HAHAHAHAHA.. You guys crack me up. Learnedetto. Im going to email Bob and run that one by him. He is one of my heroes. If any of you guys get to NAMM, makes sure you introduce yourself to the Stradivarius or our generation. This guys is the coolest and has been an inspiration to me for over a decade as a builder. His willingness to share his building has been one of the things in my life that has kept me sane. HEHEHEHE. Nothing like scraping and sanding for contemplation.
I have not even thought about pricing out one of these guitars as there is so much time involved. I really don't know where to begin...except for it wouldn't be cheap.
I really have a few other things in the works that would keep me from dedicating the time and detail that this instrument requires. I am in process of patenting a new design and I have been building the prototypes for them and that has been taking alot of time.
Man that is just killer. Some unbelievable quilt figure on that wedge. Looks like you got some neat burl figuring on the right side of the back.
If you do ever decide to allow people to order one of these, I'd love to know about it. Can't afford it right now anyways, but down the road? Who knows. This is a guitar I would be willing to pay high dollar for.
I'm interested also to see how that Redwood guitar turns out, sounds like a killer idea. Bet that will have some monster tone too.
