with todays high gain amps there is no noticible sustain difference...

Boltons- Oiled necks, easy to swap a bad neck
Neck through better access to higher registers .. oiled necks are a CS option now...

I'm not too fussed, just as long as it plays well and has a good amount of sustain.

I prefer neck-thru. Just my personal preference... (They say there's more sustain...???)

I have to say I prefer bolt ons. I have had many guitars both neck through Jacksons as well as bolt on Ibanez, PRS, Fender, Gibson, Hamer, etc...

I have long arms and fingers and big hands. I like the bolt ons because the fingerboard sticks up above the body and feels more comfortable for me to play. A neck through sort of has a recessed feelling to me and feels uncomfortable compared to bolt ons.

I have read much on the subject and I think the sustain depends more on the particular guitar than on construction. My PC1 has just as much sustain as the Warrior I have or the SL2 I use to have.

Lastly, I have noticed bolt ons seem to be brighter with a more organic tone. Neck throughs are a little darker sounding I have noticed and also read opinions on.

Because of the heel of a bolt on and construction I have to agree fret access is better on most neck throughs. I am however getting a Jackson custom with a scooped lower body horn and neck heel to where I should not have a problem with neck access.

Come to think of it the neck access on my Ibanez Jem (bolt on) is as good as any neck through I have ever seen.

I have always been a fan of bolt on my self. Not to be confused with strap on. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] Mostly due to the fact that I don't like finish on the neck. I prefer oil. Now all that went out the window this year at Summer NAMM when I seen the Jacksons where the finish was tapered off into an oil finish on the necks. I think those guitars rock. But I am having a custom Charvel built at this time. Bolt on of course.

As far as sustain, I have had bolt ons and neck throughs that have equal sustain. I think alot of it really depends on the bridge and pickups. I also notice a big difference between chrome and black hardware. Anyone else notice the difference, or is it just me?

nope you are 100% correct Mike everything shapes the tone of the guitar..

It bothers me when people who play Metal make a comment about a bolt on being inferior in the sustain dept.. the pu's and amp pretty much kill that theory.. if you need that much sustain then your not playing ...

Doesn't matter, I can play on either. Like Kev said My pick ups and amp I think shape my tone more than whether or not it's a bolt on or neck thru.

I was a die hard neck-through guy 'til I got my Jem, but like Shredmonster, I've found that its AANJ (All-Access Neck Joint) offers upper fret access that is as good as any neck-through I've ever played. So now, overall, I'd prefer a bolt-on with an AANJ. If we're talking Jacksons, I'd prefer neck-through with an oiled neck - or better yet, a Jackson with an AANJ! You guys seriously made me wonder for my guitar building project. I think I'll go for a neck thru but with oiled neck, just to be different. Indeed it's way easier for upper fret access (easoer than the AANJ too if I daresay) and I think looks better.
