Re: Neck-Thru vs. Bolt On

I´ve never been able to pinpoint why, but I´ve always gravitated towards neck-thru instead of bolt-on... given equal quality of construction, of course. It´s just something about a Soloist that feels better to me than a Dinky or a strat... heck, it might be the painted necks I like for all I know. But any way I slice it, if I could have just one or the other I´d go with neck-thru.

i'm so used to the heels of the Les Pauls and strats, for one thing. its weird for me to play a heel-less neck-through. then again, maybe i haven't found the right neck-through...

How about bolt-on or neck through AND recessed or non-recessed trems.Lets see what this causes.

Re: Neck-Thru vs. Bolt On

Ive got an RR1 and a charvel bolt-on and like em both equally....i think alot of the time people get the idea that bolt-on necks are big and bulky, but it just isnt the case IMHO.

I play both. The Jackson bolt-on's have a nice contoured heel so the feel is almost the same as the neck thru's. Sound really comes from fingers and technique IMHO.

Re: Neck-Thru vs. Bolt On

I have three bolt-ons and one setneck Jackson (see my sig).
Love them all! There's plenty of sustain with all of them, maybe not as much on the Warrior, but I've never felt like "wait, right now I would have needed more sustain".
The bolt-ons do have a snappier and brighter tone to them.
But the setneck is a Soloist Archtop Pro, so it also has the short scale... uhm...

So I guess I'm clueless and play whatever I can get and what sounds and feels good. The days of me GASing for a neck-thru just for the sake of it being a neck-thru are long gone for me.

Re: Neck-Thru vs. Bolt On

I too have 3 bolt ons and a neck thru, and the neck thru has a much thicker tone, and far greater sustain. It would be hard to make a comparison because although they are all Duncans, each one has a different model pick up.My neck thru has the 3 piece construction, and I love the way it feels, but the bolt ons have a nice wide, flat neck that plays just as awesome.
In all honesty, they each have their own merits, and doesn't much matter to me as long as it says Jackson on the headstock....
Bon Jovi is like a frozen Coca Cola.. It's cool, it's crunchy, but when all is said and done it is still pop....

Re: Neck-Thru vs. Bolt On

I prefer the neck through. I find the upper fret access is a bit better, although the caveat here is I have not played a bolt on with a sculpted heal. Either neck through or bolt on I have found a good electric guitar will usually sound pretty good when played unamplified. On a related note...I have played many guitars over the years...what are the Jackson makes where the neck is set in as opposed to the wings attached? Might be the Jazz'r series or JJ model ?? Not precisely sure on those names. Just curious. Thanks.

Exactly! If someone can't play a Fender due to what they think is a "bulky" heel, then they need to work on their technique a little and overcome it!
My hands are on the smaller side, and I've had no problem playing on any kind of a neck whatsoever.

Yea, recently I was contemplating putting a contoured heel (Warmoth style) on a extra Strat body and it is a lot of work to do without sophiscated tools. Well, I figured the heck with it. If EVH, Malmsteen and recently viewed video of Jamie Cramer playing on a stock heel, then I don't need one. Not worth the trouble unless I special order it.
Adjust your technique.
