Custom guitars

I was just thinking how wicked a job it would be if u worked at a jackson custom shop. i mean making guitars, anyone work at one? whats it like?

it might something i'll try when i'm older.But i know very little about custom shops.

I worked at PRS guitars for a short time many many years ago. This is when PRS was still a fairly small company. I felt the same way when I first started. How cool to be around quality guitars and an up and coming company. Then reality set in. It was a wharehouse full of wood, machines, sandpaper and a whole lot of dust. You had to where masks and protective glasses all the time. It was basically a big wood shop. Not so cool after all. And to top it off, they didn't pay enough to buy one the guitars you were making. No thanks!

When I was a kid, it seemed like working at an amusement park would be cool. Then I worked at one my last year of high school - it wasn't cool at all. My thinking regarding working at a shop was that I would have the skills and resources to build projects in my free time. Now that I think about it, however, I doubt I'd want to do more work after work.

I am /Was a Custom Shop maself.... Trust me, there´s a lot less glamour and fun in building guitars than some may think, most of it is boring and tedious glue work and sanding [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Making guitars is just like making anything else - it seems cool at first, but it's just a job. If you really like playing the guitar, I'd stick to that. Making them makes me want to do anything but play a guitar.

There are a couple of ways to look at it, One is "Find something you love doing and figure out a way to make a living off it", look at Tony Hawk, and some of the other "action" sports inovators, they have been able to make a very good living off basically their favorite thing to do, However, I believe you should never take a hobby that you love to do in your spare time and try to make money off doing it, that can take all the fun out of it and then its just work,
