Re: KV history
No. Dave (if you mean Mustaine?) got his first King V in 86/87 - a year after James Hetfield got his white one.
King V is a smaller version of the double rhoads. King V was named after "Robbin Crosby" although the actual double rhoads design was Dave Linsk's idea. I have the first regular size King V and the fifth which is the first black one. These were made early 85.
Robbin was clearly the most influential King V player in the mid 80s and it shows in the stats. Of the first 50 KVs half were red! 20% were black and 10% white (ivory). Most had kahlers (75%).
King V customs have Jxxxx serials and under 10% of the Jxxxx guitars are KVs. So they are rare.
Dave Mustaine was probably the first to order a 24 fret KV. He had two Megadeth logo KVs - one is in Switzerland and the other has been refinished in silver and is still with Dave.
In the early 90s the first production KVs were introduced. PCS Mustaine model (with "not mustaine like" 22 frets and FR, DMxxxx serials) and King V Pro (24 frets, Kahler APM3310). Mustaine used the sunburst KV Pro a lot during Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings tour. He had one of them modded to FR too. Later the KV1 become Mustaine's signature model and it went through some spec changes between 96 and 2000 until it was replaced by Y2KV.My band here -> http://www.diceoffate.com/

Re: KV history
Dont know who's idea it was @ 1st. Certainly wasnt Mustaine's as Robbin Crosby was seen w/ Double Rhoads (aka the 1st King V incarnation), long before Dave started using them.KV DM PRO, SLSXMG, RRXMG, DXMG, LP P90 Goldtop_GSP1101_RM4: JF SL-OD100_Randall RT2/50_Peavey 4x12 cab
I'm loving the Jaded Faith mods. Going Egnater Dual mod route: Voxless, SL-OD100, Brahma #39, QuickMod GT

Re: KV history
The story is, Dave Linsk (the lead guitar player in Overkill) who used to be in a band in the '80s called Zyris (same band Zakk Wylde was once in) had a Double Rhoads... not sure if it was his actual idea for it or not, though. Dave's guitar happened to be in the Jackson shop for repair or something, Robbin Crosby was there and saw it, wanted one made. Robbin's nickname was "King" and, since he was in a famous band at the time, he got the credit for the guitar known as the King V.I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.

Re: KV history
Dave had one US made sunburst KV1 with black HW. The other sunburst KVs were Pros. It's easy to see from the bigger logo and a lot shorter headstock. The body shape is also slightly different. Great great guitars. My band here -> http://www.diceoffate.com/

Re: KV history
What I've heard/read, Dave ordered his before Robbin, but Robbin's were delivered before Dave's...probably because Dave a zillion custom options on his. Check out Dave's guitar at Roberts site and take a look at the word order pics:

Yeah, he did. All the gold hardware CSB KVs he had were Pros. I think he had a Silver Sparkle Pro too and a couple of other Japanese made neck-thrus. Nothing wrong with them...
