  • Non flamed & non quilted tops ?

Is it possible to find guitars with transparent finishes (such as tobacco sunburst and the likes) on a top that is neither quilted nor flamed ?

    Just wondering...

Possible, yes, but a lot of good body woods don't necessarily have attractive woodgrain. Alder, poplar and mahogany are not very figured, although some pieces look very nice. Most of the non-quilted or -flamed tops with transparent finishes are ash, which is my personal favorite. Spalted maple can look great too.

Flamed Koa and Lacewood also are tops J/C have used with natural or trans finishes.

Well even that is too much figured...

            Like this:

As was stated, most body woods are not figured, so a trans finish is usually considered a waste, and can actually make the natural wood look unattractive.

Some mid-90's Dinkys were done with Ash bodies and painted in a "graphite" finish (dark trans grey with no gloss) and you could see the wood figure, but the overall appearance was just crap in many opinions.

              Okay...
What about this finish, is it trans, I don't see as much figuring as on the pictures above...

Is a Tobacco Sunburst doable without being "trans" ?

Transparents look great over ash. Not as great as a nice piece of flamed or quilted maple (hence, this one is capped on top). But pretty "traditional-like" killer in their own right, IMHO.

Re: Non flamed & non quilted tops ?

Thats a Jazz guitar Hellswrath, so the top is possibly spruce? Which has no figure at all unless its of the rare bearclaw variety. The top of my Acoustic is trans blue but the spruce has no figure at all so it looks like a solid finish.

Re: Non flamed & non quilted tops ?

Yeah I saw that but I thought that maybe that result was possible on a solid body guitar.
So my next question (haha noob fest) would be, is a tobacco sunburst possible as a solid finish ?

hrm...I don't know but I think the sunburst effect is created because of transparency of the finish. One of the luthiers or painters on the board would be able to answer that better though. I'm pretty sure I've seen some old solid color bursts on old jacksons. Like Blue and greenbursts.

Re: Non flamed & non quilted tops ?

Probably the easiest way if you're having one built is to request a plain (non-figured) maple top and do the normal transparent burst on that. Plain maple has very little figure, spruce is another good alternative as noted above.

A burst finish is possible without trans colors.look at the LP Silverburst for example.you would just have to use regular paint as apposed to the translucent paints..the "fun" part would be choosing the proper colors..
