<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Agreed. I recently got a Model 2 and I removed the cover during my initial setup. I really like it.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Actually, you can. I've played for 20 years and this Model 2 is the first guitar I've ever owned with jumbo frets.

So there's a big difference in sound??
Maybe I should try that.
Can someone explain the difference, I know it's hard, and is it worth it?

It's not that hard. The glue seems to be normal hot glue and not epoxy. Just grab the "ears" on the pickups and start pulling. The glue should be old enough by now that the cover will pop right off.

The plastic covers knock down the output by about 8dB. The J90 is hot even with the covers, but without it you're talking EMG output here, at least to my ears. The only problem is that they don't have much bottom end so they're mostly useless to me. Think similar to a Bill Lawrence L500XL but with a more trebly sound and you're in the ballpark.

Jacksonshredder gave me a good tip a while back when he was checking out my Model 1 – in addition to taking the plastic cover off the pickup, turn the pickup around so it is installed backwards. I did this on my Model 1 and it cranked up the output, removed all harshness and pumped up the bottom end. I liked the tone when the guitar was stock, but I like it even better now with the mods.

I'm liking it so far. I'm a Lynch Fan so I'm finding the tone enjoyable for that kind of stuff.

Although for Metalica type stuff, not enough "oomph"

Very "Dokken" "Ratt" type of sound to my ears.

I'll have to give that "turn-around" thing a try.

Geeze, I've kept this thing stock since 1987.. NOW I decide to F**k with it...

How do you get the pickup covers off the J-200? Im assuming that i can't because there seems to be plastic all around it...anyone ever gotten the plastic off?

eric:
The 650xl DO have J-90's in them....You should beable to, that's what i did with my 650xl...seemed to have increased the output nicely.
