Re: Who here likes bolt ons more than neck thrus a

Theres definitely a noticable feel difference between the two(bolt on's and neck thru). For me, neck thru neck has a stiff feel to it. Whereas, the bolt on neck seem to have a give feel to it, which I prefer.

As far as HEARING a significant sustain difference between the two, its minimal at best. Far from a jaw dropping difference like many would lead to believe. Sustain, is an equation that has alot of factors or varibles to it. A neck thru, is not the "be all and end all" answer to sustain. A huge misconception which many falsely believe.

My ESP Kami Lynch model is a bolt neck and has more sustain than most neck thru guitars.
Its about the type of wood, electronics, craftmanship and yes, even the player is a varible to consider as well.

Me, I prefer well crafted top notch bolt on's. Obviously Charvels, some ESP's, the wolfies, original had to find kramers all and others are great bolt on's.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

I own a pair of Soloists and a Charvel 3B bass that I really like, but I always reach for a bolt-on first when I want to play. For some reason, I play better on an oiled neck, and there just seems to be a different vibe (not quantifiable like "sustain") that appeals to me as a player. On the other hand, I do find that neck-thru construction has a much more solid, sturdy feel that has nothing to do with playing but does give me an impression that one of my Soloists could take much more of a beating (or administer the beating better) than a Dinky.

only ever played bolt-ons. the sound is bassy and the construction is solid. i don't see the point in spending 2 or 3 times more on a neckthru.

I have (and have had) both. I hate the feel of painted or otherwise "shiny" necks, so I guess that rules out most neckthru's for me. I don't have the heart to strip and oil the neck on my soloist so it rarely ever gets played. I'll likely sell it and buy another dinky.

+1 For me it's a feel thing. I prefer the natural feel of my bolt on necks vs. the painted set necks. And for a guitar w/ a Floyd or other floating bridge, my feeling is that 90% of the sustain is lost in the floating bridge vs. the neck joint.

I own 2-Kings, 1 Big Red, 1-Firebird that are neck-thru, a Warrior, Dinky and a Charvie 7 Tele for bolt-ons. I get off on the feel of neck-thru ~vs~ bolties.

To me, they feel more stable and solid.

I have 2 bolt ons and a set neck. I love them all, and don't find any problem with the glossed or finished neck on my setneck 67 V.

my bolt ons are killer players and have loads of sustain.

Re: Who here likes bolt ons more than neck thrus a

I have all 3 types and they all feel/play great but differenly. Bolt ons are great due to the interchangabilty of the necks. Neck thrus have great access to upper frets.

But for bolt on guitars, do you prefer the old Fender style joint or an Ibanez AANJ joint?

i can't answer this yet, as right now all my guitars are bolt on. there's a neck-thru on the way, though, and i'm very curios how much of a difference there really is.
í like the slightly "snappy" sound of bolt ons, they seem to have more attack (i played a few neck-thru's at stores). however, i wonder if the neck thru construction will give me the better high fret access that some bolt on's seem to lack.

Great answers guys. I don't feel so bad about liking bolt ons.

As I was reading your replies, I thought of all my heros and what they play. Lynch, Dave and sometimes Adrian (he seems to like set neck or neck thrus), Jake, EVH, DeGarmo and Wilton. If bolt ons are good enough for them, and they can have anything...

But then again you have Dave, Kirk, James, Dimebag - different styles of music requires different style of guitars?

Last night I was playing some Maiden on my old Charvel Fusion Deluxe. 100% stock, and what a great sound! It doesn't have flashy sharkies or ebony, stock Jackson pickups, but damn I love it!

My tally is 5 set necks, 3 neck thrus, and soon to be 8 bolt ons.

here's another possibility: is it a deep-set neck, or neck almost-thru

Good question
Bolt-on guitars sound different and I prefer that bolt-on-sound over the comfort of a neck-thru.
