I'm curious what you guys' opinions are of the quality and playability of the Charvel Avenger. From what I've read online it's the '80s pre-Jackson Rhoads, apparently built in Japan.
There's been one at a local pawn shop (with hard case) for years, it's in pretty sad shape but I think it's repairable. Looking at the Avenger in the pawn shop it had some BIG chunks of paint gone from the corners along with missing screws from the nut (and elsewhere I'm sure), and pretty much all the hardware is rusty. What I'm curious about is if I would end up with a better guitar than buying one of the cheap far east made (and crappy from what I hear) JS series Jacksons.
I guesstimate if I can get the Charvel for $100 and repair/have it repaired (it still has the same $450 price tag on it from 10 years ago) I'll end up with about the same or less money in it than say a Jackson JS-20 or JS-30RR.
I think I'd have a hard time justifying spending much more than $300 whichever way I went, because to be honest my attention span is too short for me to ever play well enough to need an awesome guitar. But I'm so sick of my '68 Holiday that I only play once every couple of months and I've wanted a Jackson since the first time I picked one up at the store.
Thanks in advance for your expert advice.
