• Redo Avenger or buy new cheapie?

    New member, first post.

I'm curious what you guys' opinions are of the quality and playability of the Charvel Avenger. From what I've read online it's the '80s pre-Jackson Rhoads, apparently built in Japan.

There's been one at a local pawn shop (with hard case) for years, it's in pretty sad shape but I think it's repairable. Looking at the Avenger in the pawn shop it had some BIG chunks of paint gone from the corners along with missing screws from the nut (and elsewhere I'm sure), and pretty much all the hardware is rusty. What I'm curious about is if I would end up with a better guitar than buying one of the cheap far east made (and crappy from what I hear) JS series Jacksons.

I guesstimate if I can get the Charvel for $100 and repair/have it repaired (it still has the same $450 price tag on it from 10 years ago) I'll end up with about the same or less money in it than say a Jackson JS-20 or JS-30RR.

I think I'd have a hard time justifying spending much more than $300 whichever way I went, because to be honest my attention span is too short for me to ever play well enough to need an awesome guitar. But I'm so sick of my '68 Holiday that I only play once every couple of months and I've wanted a Jackson since the first time I picked one up at the store.

Thanks in advance for your expert advice.

It was just a rhoads, with a charvel toothpaste logo, slanted pickup, and I believe a single locking floyd trem, made somewhere between 89-93.

I would personally snag a used RR3 from ebay instead

My apologies, I read that info about the Avenger being the model that later turned into the Jackson Rhoads on some website.

Id go with the Avenger... rear routed, single slant hum/single coil looks really unique!

I say go used RR3 (or new for that matter). The single coil on the avenger & lack of Sharkfin inlays just puts me off on that guitar.

                  Education:
about 1980/81 Randy caontacted Grover, (@ this time company was still only Charvel), Randy had comeup w/ a custom offset V shape. Grover fine tuned the shape & out came what is refered to as the LTD or Shortwing (white w/ black pins rear routed 2 volume & 2 tone controls, vintage trem). It was considered so radical that Grover slapped the Jackson logo on it so as not to hurt Charvel if it bombed.

Isn't the Avenger the one with the bridge humbucker that is basically 2 single coils mounted next to each other? Would you be able to just route the tangs off the wood to slap a real humbucker in there with a mounting ring or will there need to be filler to hide some gaps?

the avenger is the charvel rhoads. and it is a kick ass axe. poplar body, 1 slanted hum, 1 single in the neck. great playing and sounding axe. i had one with a BL-500xl in the bridge and it smoked. i sold to someone here. if you enjoy fixing up guitars, by all means pick that bad boy up.

Talk him down to $400 or $350 (which you CAN DO seeing it's been in there for ages). Then fix her up, pop two new pups in it and you've got yourself a sweet guitar. (Way) better than an RR3, imho.
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

get it as cheap as possible, put a good pup in the bridge and leave the charvel single in the neck - it ain't bad at all.

How would you put a normal humbucker in this?

Notice there is not a rectangular cutout around the pickup cavity. Will there be any routing required to put a normal humbucker in it's place?
