    Re: carved tops

good point about the recessed knobs Sunbane, I forgot about that, the jackson archtops all have the recessed knobs, my BC Rich archtop doesn't unfortunately but since its an LP style layout I find myself less likely to roll them off accidentally anyways.

I agree about graphics on archtop, probably because the curves can distort the graphics to some degree. It depends on the graphic though. Something simple would be fine I think. A Bengal or a Rising Sun something like that. Anything busier then that and I think the graphic loses some impact. Even Ghost Flames I don't think would look quite right on an archtop.

      Re: carved tops

You can definately hear a difference say between a Les Paul flat top (Special SL) and any carved top Gibson Les Paul. Actually strike that, it may be more of a feel thing while playing it. And usually when I make a statement like that, there is someone there to prove me wrong.

But you definately hear a chunkier sound due to either the a) maple cap, b) the thicker body, or c) I am crazy and I hear dead people.

        Re: carved tops

Tops, regardless of carving, will affect your sound. Usually carved tops are thicker at their thickest and the same thickness as an ordinary 3/4" top at their lowest non-carved sides, meaning they might have just that bit more impact on sound.

Overall the neck determines your sound most of all though, a maple neck on a mahogany guitar would affect your sound more than a maple top on a mahogany guitar.

Both would be cumulative, I'd imagine.

As with all things 'tone', this is dangerous territory, since so many people feel it's strictly subjective, but one thing we can say with fairness is EVERYTHING affects your tone, even the little amount of grease still on your fingers after eating that last chickenwing from last weekend's new year's eve party!
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

          Re: carved tops

I'll agree that a carved top will have a different tone than a flat veneer. But if you take a guitar that has a 1/4" flat maple top and the same guitar that has a carved top measuring 5/8" at its thickest, I think they would sound very similar. The reason being is that a lot of that top is taken off to accomidate the arch. The amount of maple on the top ends up being very close to the same amount.

I like ornaments, especially the big ones.

Not true. They supply additional warmth in the winter and shade in the summer.

If it's a neck-thru, the neck would definitely have more of an affect on sound.
