  • Praise for GMW!

I needed some control plates for my Jacksons. WD wanted $30 for a trem cover and a Control cover. From experience I know that they always need tweaking afterward, so I was holding out to buy some real ones. Yogadork suggested I talk to Lee at GMW. Lee wanted tracings of the cavities or of a control plate that I knew was the same size. He told me they would be $10 each. I was worried as I thought he was just going to do a typical WD job on plastic, but at $10 each, I had to give him a try. I sent the tracings out last Friday. Today (one week to the day) I get them in and was surprised to see they are the correct aluminum black anodized and they are PERFECT! I can't tell the difference between his and the stock ones I have! The screw holes line up, everything is dead on!

If you need a control plate, go to Lee at GMW. It was reasonable in price, arrived fast, and is better than I hoped for.

You will be happy! Just take the extra care to trace the cavities or plates right.

By the way, I was just looking and I bet he can make a killer Rhoads V anodized pickguard! The material is identical. He even anodized it after making the plates so there are no silver edges.

jim, did you use regular tracing paper for it? i know, kind of a stupid question, but hey, i'm inquisitive.

          Re: Praise for GMW!

Not stupid at all! I was lucky in that I had guitars around with control plates that were right for what I needed, so I traced them onto plain printer paper. I did it with a nice felt tip pen, took my time, and then I mailed them unfolded in a manila envolope. If you need to trace a cavity you have no plate around to use as a template is use a piece of tracing paper or even thin printer/typewriter paper, use a pencil and rub the edge of the cavity with the pencil so you get a dark line. Let him know you got the tracing from the cavity so he knows where to cut the plate. You may have to roughly place your screw holes with that type of tracing, but if you take your time, you should be able to get damn close. On my tremolo cover plates I had to kind of use a Fender plate (which was too large) to make a rough estimation of the plate dimensions, then I measured where the screw holes were. I must have done a great job (which means anyone can) as the plates came out perfect with the screw holes lined up dead on.

okay, so if i have a non jackson/charvel body that needs a plate, i'm outta luck, yes?

                    Re: Praise for GMW!

I was wrong about GMW making these plates. They are actually Jackson manufactured plates. The tracings are used to make sure you get the exact one.

With GMW, yes. WD would be your option now. They used to offer (and still did last I knew) black anodized aluminum.
