  • temperature affecting cases

the reason i ordered a JCC917 Warrior case was to protect the guitar from climate and transport damage. i've read elsewhere that they won't be safe unless kept in the boot of the car. if the case won't fit and has to go on the back seat and consequently the guitar suffers the same temperature problems that it would without a case, surely i've just wasted my money on a non-refundable special order?

    Re: temperature affecting cases

Are you saying that plastic molded cases are not hermetically sealed against earthly elements?

    **gasp**

Hopefully Anvil, TKL, SKB, or G&G have enough foresight to contact Michael Jackson to have him as a rep for their hyperbaric-chamber-case department. (Bubbles could be his secretary)

Sorry for the sarcasm, but the best way to keep your guitar safe from temperature changes would be to keep them inside where you can control the temperature.

Not sure about the temperature thing but a hard shell case to protect the guitar (particularly a pointy) is not a waste at all.

boot is the trunk, right? so how would the temperature be different int he trunk than in the cabin of the car? at least you can have heat/A/C in the cabin of the car to controll the temperature somewhat. i dont see what the problem is

          Re: temperature affecting cases

When you move a guitar (in a case) from outside in the cold, you need to let it acclimate to its surroundings indoors and leave it in the case for awhile. What's the problem?

Don't leave guitars in your car (the passenger compartment OR the boot/trunk)!!!

Not only do you have to worry about the temperature affecting them, but they could get stolen!!!

              Re: temperature affecting cases

i'm just responding to a comment made in another post whereby a member said that it would be innapropriate to keep a case on the back seat, and that the humidity in the cabin would cause a problem whereas the boot (yes, the trunk) would pose less of a problem.

                Re: temperature affecting cases

depends on the temperature in the front (cabin). I would think that the temperature in the trunk (boot) would be more likely to cause problems if any. But alot of this depends on the guitar. The cases main purpose is to protect it during transportation. Particularly for pointy guitars. You should always have a hardcase for pointy guitars, always.

But John is right you should never LEAVE them in a car. If the ac/heat is running to a normal temperature it will be fine for moving it from one place to another.

                  Re: temperature affecting cases

If a guitar case is only in the trunk for say 20 minutes while driving to a gig, then you most likely would be okay, but I still put my cases inside the vehicle just to be safe. If you left the case in a trunk that is 10 degrees for 10 hours, then took it straight inside to 70-ish degree temperatures and opened the case you could have major problems with the guitar. The case slows down the temperature change that the guitar sees and protects it from getting banged up, but it doesn't hermetically seal the guitar as others mentioned. How long does it take before the outside temperature starts affecting the guitar inside the case? I dunno. Probably depends on what the case is made of, how thick it is, etc. and also how extreme the temperature is.

                    Re: temperature affecting cases

I'm starting to think I will buy only one really nice guitar just to keep at home and record with. Gigging guitars will be $500 guitars, or somewhere around there. Should they go to shit (that of which they will, they're gigging guitars), I won't be heartbroken. I need a good, solid playing guitar, and one really nice one at home.

                      Re: temperature affecting cases

You don't want the guitar to get over 100f/35c degrees for any extended periods.. the paint could lift off the body due to condensation of the wood under the paint. IT is not a pretty thing.

Definitely don't leave a guitar in a car, especially on a hot day.

this makes me wonder if i should spend this summer inventing an AC system for guitar cases.. hmm...

But if you let it sit in the new warmer temperature you'd be fine, right?

once transported to a warm room, the case is to remain shut for a few hours before removing the guitar.
