Of course if you search for 'Gay' the search function works fine and you get many results. Not sure if the turn is very suprising after all.

Re: What\'s my dream JCF

I really enjoy these boards. Like a previous poster, I come here to read and learn (so i think ) A LOT, way more so than I choose to post; especially after lurking for a long time before even registering... Anyway, everybody here knows guitars way more than I do - so I just look for answers to my questions.

my "issues" are small: the search function - it took me a while to learn how to work with it. now that i know it, it's ok. but it could be better, as it's been already stated.

and onto the topic of noobs. again, as it's been stated, they get jumped on pretty quickly. it's like they're not allowed to be noobs (human) for god sake.

i bet the average active jcf member (as in, one who posts a couple of times a week) age is over 25. maybe even up into the 30's. It would be interesting to see. Regardless, my point is sometimes this board can build a rep of having a membership of cranky elders, and getting new kids excited about an untapped world (for them) of J/C guitars and the community that plays them becomes more of a challenge, if the kids are always getting embarrassed. It may not matter that much, and it may affect very little of the J/C rep... but it COULD be better. Let kids be kids.

For my own knowledge, somebody please explain to me how redundant posts hurt, since these are the posts the most likely come from noobs, who we actually need in order to pass the torch to keep JCF and Jackson guitars in general, alive and relevant? I mean, it's FUN making posts. Isn't a little redundancy worth it? So, what's the deal? Is it a bandwidth memory kinda thing that admins pay for out of their own pocket?

oh, PS, thanks for having such a civil community with LOTS of answers!!!! the usual minor greviances that accompany the world of message boards aside, this place definitely is the web's best kept secret.

Here's my take (and opinion) on that. I view the JCF as a party/convention going on in (Kevin, Todd, Jeremy, Sully, and Ralph's) house. There are lot of conversations going on in the different rooms, nice posters and pics on the walls. When we invite new members, they should be polite and introduce themselves, adding to the convos and sharing what knowledge they have. If a new member, however, busts in the door and the first thing out of his mouth is "Buy my guitar!" that would be considered extremely rude, and several members will yell "hey didn't you see the big banner over the entrance, ya numbnuts?" On the JCF we have the 100 post rule to deal w/ that. Or, say, the guy actually brings his axe to the party and immediately asks "What exact model do I have; how much is it worth?" - thrusting it in our face.

So, now let's say at this party most members know alot about something, say Dave Mustaine's guitars, and there is also a huge scrapbook in the room (archives, search function). The immediate starting of new threads I liken to this scenario: the newcomer, rather than circulating, checking out the pics on the wall, listening, perusing the scrapbooks (clicking on threads from yesterday, last week, etc) just busts on in, with his own scrapbook, slams it down, and asks the question. The more patient partygoers may tell him the answer; others may roll their eyes, point to the ORIGINAL scrapbook (or picture on the wall), or make a funny comment.

So it's all a matter of etiquette IMO.

Fortunately, we have Ron working the front door at this party.

ron, that's actually an excellent analogy, and i agree with a fair amount of it. however, i kinda like it when a new member starts up a thread like dream guitars. sure, there's tons of them, and yeah, one could search... but that particular instance isn't all too offensive. i think that if someone comes to a party and introduces themselves accordingly, there's nothin really wrong with striking up a side conversation...

What's the deal with the search function on the JCF anyhow?

I know it's not because of software limitations. The UBB stuff does not have 9 month search limitations or any time lapse requirements. This has to be the way it's configured on the JCF.

the worst thing on the search function is:
"you can't make another search at this time"
i really hate that message

otherwise the JCF is quite good as it is
