Re: 1985 Jackson Rhodes vs New ones

Duh...I should have known SD...I actually was around when they were making those. Thanks for all the info. This 85 the guy has states they are early jackson humbuckers but they dont have the black cap over them, they are the open dual finger style humbuckers.

Yes. The neckthrus have always been numbered that way.

In my opinion, the neck shapes have remained surprisingly consistent on the neckthru Jacksons over the years. The '85 might have a slightly thicker neck than a modern RR1, but not extremely thicker.

My '85 is quite different from my 02, and from my old (now Noodles) '89. It is a bit thicker, more les paulish. I had another '85 that I sold that had a baseball bat for a neck. I think that the '84-'86 range is going to vary a lot guitar to guitar.

If it is string thru with shark fin inlays buy it as an investment if you dont like how it plays. I own 40 + guitars and my two main ones are my 84 Rhoads and my 88 Anderson if you pass on it please PM me the sellers info as I would buy it. By the way if it has dot inlays its a student model and not worth as much also a Kahler or floyd is not that desirable.

Another difference: I believe 3-piece necks with no scarf joints were also the norm on RRs in the San Dimas days but since they were all one-offs who knows what might be lurking under the paint.

IIRC, only the early-ish ones were 3 pieces. I believe they switched to scarf joint styles around '84 or '85-ish.

Pickups were what ever you wanted at a price in 85. Jackson pickups didn't start until mid 86 and 87 started using that horrible Floyd knockoff.

I thought I had read that the first Jackson pickups began appearing in '85, though obviously not with the labelled covers. I don't recall ever seeing an early Rhoads with anything but Duncans, however. But, as you say, if you could order it, they'd build it.

My '84 had a Jackson J90C in the bridge, but i got in in '87

Des it have a kalher or a floyd? If it is a factory floyd, then buy the guitar. If u dont like it, someone here will grab it from you. If it has a kalher, then I would still gte it if the price is right (I have a kahlered '84 RR - great guitar IMHO).

Its a floyd....he wants 1850 is that too much?....someone else said maybe its worth about 1500...it looks mint...no dings or dents

Factory floyd will command a premium, but that sounds a little high to me in todays market, but mint and floyd - may get it if he gets in on the net - there are some serious collectors (older Jacksons are usually not commanding those prices unless there is someting special about them - but I think we are very close to the era of the 'faked' Jackson strathead so who knows).

If it is your dream guitar, then I would try to negotiate and see if he will come down. On the otherhand, if a recessed floyd does not bother you, I would say grab a new one for 1/2 that price. If, on the otherhand, you have the coin and it plays right, grab it. Kinda depends on your point of view and financial position.

1850 is way too much IMO
