• Can J50BC+JE1000 do a brutal death metal?

Hey! Greetings to all! I'm new to the board...

(I hope I put this into right section)
So, can J50BC pickup and JE1000 electronics do a death metal tone? I know that the pickup itself won't, cause it's medium output, but what about with JE1000? I'm interested into this configuration cause I like Alexi's shred tone a lot and would like to use the same guitar for a DM too.

BTW, how does the J90C sound with JE1000?

Its all about the amp bro. Welcome to the board. What amp are you using?

The JE1000 is nothing more that a gain boost. It does have the 3 miniswitches but I don't think that those will turn your tone into what you are looking for.

Actually, there's some confusion. The JE-1000 is NOT a gain boost. It's just a peak select control with three dip switches. The gain boost itself is the switch which can be added to the JE-1000. With the switch, it would be the JE-1000 G.

Welcome.

I would say find out what pickups, amps, speakers, etc. he is using and duplicate those. If I knew what type of pickup he is using, I could tell you if the J50BC is a good match for it.

Alexi did use the J50BC, Don. He's now using an EMG HZ in his ESPs.

Even though Alexi is using EMG HZ's he also uses a booster. Musamaailma (music store in finland that arranged alexi's esp endorsement) builds it's own booster that is a duplicate of the discontinued JE-1000 called MM-04, except it has 4-band eq. This is installed to the ESP signature models afterwards, so they are not "officially" there. So, to get Alexi's sound you'll need a JE-1000. I know this because I recently contacted Musamaailma about the same thing and ordered the MM-04.

The JE-1000 has 20 db of boost enough to drive any amp into overdrive. I have a guitar with a JE=1000 with 4 dip switches.

I don't know about Alexi's gear, along time ago I used to use a J-90C w/ the JE-1000 and it sounded great. I also ran that into a Furman PQ-3 and a Marshall Jubilee head, that was a great combination. Wish I still had that setup actually.

The J-50bc was a little too muddy I thought. I like the J-90C alot better. It has more gain and better tone IMO.

So let me get this straight. He's asking if the pickup and preamp he has (J50BC + JE-1000) will sound like Alexi, yet this is the same setup Alexi uses, so why the fuck was this question even asked

I agree, but that tone works great for other types of music. I love playing Queensryche with this pickup in my Jackson Fusion Professional. For Death or Speed Metal, I'm not sure, I'd probably stick to EMG's.

Nope, I'm asking if I could get death metal sound out of it. Not like cob, but more like dying fetus, cannibal corpse, deicide type of sound. I'd like to have a guitar that i could get out something similar to Alexi's sound + more brutal type of sound. I have a Crate GX130c head which has more than enough of dist for me and is what cannibal corpse used on few cds.

"With the switch, it would be the JE-1000 G." Hum??? I could be wrong. I thought the blue box allowed you to dial in the amount of gain you want. Without the toggle, the gain level is always present. Adding the toggle would allow you to turn off the gain boost from the blue box. The peak selectors are always active???

I gotcha now. I still think maybe EMG's might be a better choice. The J50BC has a lot of overtones and flavors, that might not be considered "tight" or "chunky".

My understanding is that with the JE-1000 bare bones, there is no outside control at all. So, yes, it's always on, and the only way you can change the mid-frequency that's boosted is by flipping the 3 dip switches for 8 possible different mid-frequencies. Although I have never seen it documented what frequencies correspond with each of the 8 possible dip switch configs.

And no...I have no idea what dip switch setting Alexi used!
