Re: What to expect with a Custom Order ?

I heard (and I believe there is even a post from John confirming) that all Customs ordered after June or July something like that would have Binders/cd. I'll be pretty pissed if I don't get one, especially because I am very interested in seeing my guitars evolution.

We had to wait for the binders on the Greenie run and we were promised those as part of the deal.
For those that are not given that nugget, I'll bet nothing is coming your way. Too much of a hassle on their part and if people keep pushing for those damn things we are going to get a $300 price hike on CS orders just to get a binder with some pics and a blank cert.

Re: What to expect with a Custom Order ?

I originally ordered mine in Oct of 04, but I was told through email that I would be geting a binder/photo cd.

To tell you the truth, I wouldn't even mind if I was told that ther will be a wait for it. Even three months, but haven't gotten any communication from Jackson on it. Scott (Vwall) has emailed them, but I haven't heard anything.

I'm sorry and dont' mean to get off track here, but customer service seems to have gone by the wayside in my opinion. At least I'm getting good customer service from the dealer, but what good is that if Jackson doesn't supply the binder?

I just checked my old emails and in July of 05 I had asked if I would be getting one of the Master built binders with a photo cd and was told "Yes, you will get one."

The answer came from Scott, but I think he got that answer from Mike Kotzen. Not looking to post blame, I just wanted to check to see if I had indeed gotten an answer about the binders and I did.

If you go back and read his post, Newc, he said he wanted his custom to have a neck exactly like a PC1. But I believe he's talking about a custom Demon that had the "smurfhat" headstock. And that is a 3+3 tilt-back design.

Re: What to expect with a Custom Order ?

My Napalm Bengal I received in December got a photo binder. A month or so late. I think I got it late January. It's a nice addition but I don't think it was planned for the Guitar as I only got a few shots of it and not many of it being built.

It's not the end all of goodies but a nice addition and I think they will only get better over time.

I was more concerned about the "You'll be lucky just to get the guitar made correctly.
" line.
Has there been a rash of problems on the CS guitars for this to be true?

The being specific thing is important. Do not assume anything. If you order a CS and dont specificy something and they change the spec on what is standard, you will gte the new standard unless you had speced it to a T originally.

I can't speak for anyone else but the Custom Shop absolutely nailed mine. It was exactly what I asked for and more. I was truly impressed that they got it that right.

Be very specific down to the tuning and string gauge you want on it. Like others have said. Don't assume anything.

Mine came out better than I imagined and exactly how I expected. I had problems with finish cracking, but thats another story. I'm really happy with mine inspite of the finish flaws. It just would have been nice to get the binder as promised.

Re: What to expect with a Custom Order ?

Ha! Guess I was a wee bit cranky this morning.

I love the Soloist I just got from the CS. Yes, it had a few (incredibly) trivial issues,
but nothing I felt worthy of raising a stink over.
I got what I paid for and am quite happy. I would do it all over again. Happily.
In fact, I'm getting ready to just that.

I was more annoyed about the binder issues more than anything else.
It's a nice touch, IF THEY FOLLOWED THROUGH WITH IT!
They've been talking about these things for the last two years and Jack seems to be the only one
who got one. And even then it sounds like they half-assed it.
I appreciate the thought, but if it is proving to be a pain in the ass then drop it and move on.
I'd rather they consentrate on building the guitars than having to stop what they are doing to
correctly document the buidling of what??? say 300 Custom Shop guitars a year?

I do not mind not having the binders, even though I was lead to believe I would get one.
I do not mind the 18 month wait, even though they still spout the '8-14 months' line.
I do not mind the fact that it sat in the factory, completed, for almost three months before they shipped it.
I do not mind that they can't drill the dam strap button on correctly.
But there are others that would mind.

Assume nothing. Specify everything.

Re: What to expect with a Custom Order ?

Samen, I know what you mean about customer service. They pissed me off so badly over the issue with one of my soloists. I really like how it's like,

"you spent over 1000$ (in some cases over 2000$) for this guitar. Eat shit if you think you're getting customer service."

Granted, other people may have had a good experience, however I didn't. If I order a custom (which is close, I've been looking at limited runs (the 12 or 10 deal) and have looked at some of the limited custom runs (the trans purple SL2H for example) but have passed, because for the jing, I want my own.

It will happen, but there will have to be some serious communifuckingcation between Jackson, the Dealer, and Me. Any fuck ups, it's the company, and it WILL be made right. Yeah, maybe the USA Select isn't worthy of warranty service (Sarcasm here), or customer service, but a Custom Shop had better be.

I hate to sound harsh, but with a custom well over 2000$, you had better be getting "custom".

Re: What to expect with a Custom Order ?

Fender has never been known for good customer service, which is why I avoid their products and have cringed at them buying Jackson since day one!

Years ago a friend borrowed a guys Charvel. He did something very stupid and broke the head off of it. He called Jackson wanting to buy a new neck for the guitar. At first they didn't want to, but they did sell him the neck.

Try calling Fender and try that and see what happens.

And while I'm on the rant about Fender, I have noticed Jackson quality going downhill. I bought a DKMG made pre-fender that was perfect. Every one I have bought since then I've had to literally search for a consistent neck shape! Some are very fat, not a DK at all!

The binders - I have been wondering about that since I bought one of the Trans Purple SL2H's. Nothing was ever mentioned about the binder so I just assumed it didn't come with one. Not a huge issue, but would be cool to have.

Custom Shops - I can definitely say that you should take EVERYTHING into consideration. I placed my order with Matt at Matt's Music and he has been great dealing with me on this order. I know what I should do now when ordering so I won't be such a pain when I place the next order!

Don't assume anything will just be done the way you are thinking. This is a custom order, which means it's being made to your specs. If you just fill out the quote form and don't give special instructions you may end up with a high dollar disappointment... Not that they did anything wrong, just made a basic guitar without special instructions.

I assumed that the neck-thrus had good neck tilt, but after getting this SL2H I discovered that it's straight as an arrow with the body, zero tilt. So I had to add that as note a month or so after I finalized my order. Hopefully, it will be the way I like it, if not I learned an expensive lesson!
