Re: Before this gets out of hand...

I for one have no problem with lurkers, and also no problem with people who don't converse much selling their gear in the Classifieds.

I agree with guyver1/Newc/ germandeth. You should have access to view, not post at least the general talk and non jc thread without joining. You would keep the membership base cleaner and let people decide if it is board they want to join.

Making people join and then forcing them to post just adds to what this thread is attempting to avoid.

I would rather have some one just come and look than post crap for the sake of posting. That is usually the death of most boards, when the noise over loads the value.

So I guess this means we will see alot of "I have been a lurking non contributing member for a while now so this is my first (and only) post because I don't want to be kicked off the board that I contribute NOTHING to".
Why join a board and just read and NEVER post?
Becoming an active member of this board has helped me become a better musician all around.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree on your points of the benefits.. to an extent.
I'll use the Dean forum as an example as they did the very same thing about a year or two or so ago.

The forum changes over format or restarts on a new board/server...everyone has to start from ground zero on their profile & post counts all over again. The Dean forum did this.. so when it went offline for a bit, I stopped checking it out. When it came back up, I signed back up and really hardly ever posted there again as I was usually here, different crowd, differing clique ya know?...so a notice gets sent, I must post otherwise I'll have my acct deleted. Ok, no biggie.. I went and made a few posts.
Don't get me wrong, I like my Deans too...but my nic is not 'Deanguy' .. I've just usually been more partial to Charvels.

Most forums seem to thrive on the fact that to be a active member in good standing you must be constantly interactive...the forum is a great place for all types of information & perspective, but its not something I live for...even tho guitar may be something I lived, breathed and slept for many years..it has not always been a constant #1. Certainly, my forum counterpart of myself will be the same. Personally, I think people who have lower post counts probably have better things to do...which is fine and understandable. My personal take on it is if you have a couple hundred posts you want to come here and read but are not a post whore..that is fine by me.

I'm with Matt/NEWC on this.. its the internet, I have spent/wasted enough of my life on that. Sometimes I need to watch publicTV and get my education too.

Re: Before this gets out of hand...

I think some 'new guys' don't post because they feel they will be mocked for being a new guy. Just because a guy is new to this forum, doesn't mean he's new to the guitar... Just maybe didn't even know about this forum, (possibly because he spends his time playing his guitar...)

Re: Before this gets out of hand...

Oh, that surely wouldn't happen here. The only thing you have to worry about is poor spelling and grammar, lack of punctuation, and not being able to open your guitar case.

Re: Before this gets out of hand...

yaaa, even the old guys get mocked...but after being out of the loop in guitar circles for many years, I had some catching up to do and I still have plenty to learn. The world of guitar is ever changing, new products, new methods, new styles.. etc..you name it.

B-sides, the JCF is kinda a 'hidden'..takes a browser refresh on the sign in link to get the sign in to even come up..I imagine for IP tracking?

If any one wants to ask me about BMX - fun or Mutual Fund Accounting - not fun, that's all I know about. But I very much appreciate the information on here, and also when I did ask questions I got great answers, so thanks to everybody it's a great place

Re: Before this gets out of hand...

The JCF is designed is such a manner that you should be able to find something of interest to be a part of and that is what the experience is all about. For years we have had members that do not own a Jackson but come here for the knowledge of amps, recording or simply because it is fun... all it takes is some iteraction to open up a new world for yourself here, so don't feel like you have nothing to contribute

how can you 'find something of interest to be a part of' if you cant browse the forum unregistered to see whether you want to be a part of it before you sign up!?!?

This 'hiding' of forums seems to be an 'American' thing as I've never seen any UK/Euro forums doing this.

Unhide the forums, you'll get FAR more traffic/people browsing the wealth of information here, and you'll get people signing up BECAUSE they like what they see, and NOT because they have to sign up just to see whats on offer.

you could also do yourselves a small favour and get a better forum software package like the free open source PHPBB or the pay for vBulletin.
