Color question...

I was wondering if it was possible to have, on a maple top, a black, that would be mate and at the same time that would let the wood "veins" and such be seen through it, not like trans black where the black is grey-ish (but the wood figures are seen for sure)...
I don't know if that's really clear but ESP had a Custom Horizon in such a color, but in white... Don't have the picture on the site anymore though.
Any thoughts ?

I think you're going to need to find a picture ... because black stains always end up looking somewhere between grey, silver, and brown.

The result I'm thinking about is to get something that would look like black wood...

YES! Very much like this! On a second thought, glossy wouldn't be too bad I guess, as long as the wood can be seen and the color remain black.

Looks like a matte satin black stain on swamp ash, maybe?
